Sorry Andy, I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean you use the annual insurance or the E111 as mentioned in the title?

The E111 is no longer valid from 31 December and you now need the new EHIC card if you are travelling in the EU. Further info HERE

Sorry for not being clear.

I was just letting people know that they do not have to rely on the E111 or the new one but they can buy, at a small cost, an annual policy that will cover them for lots of bits.

Of course the EHIC can be done as well, but people should be aware of the annaul insurance policies they could buy at quite a surprising low price.

Oopps, sorry sound like a salesman.

Thanks for the clarification. No-one should rely on the EHIC card for travel abroad as it doesn't cover things like lost or delayed baggage, delayed departure or repatriation should you need it.

A good travel insurance policy is essential and as you say, you can get an annual policy for a relatively low cost. I have just had my renewal in from Nationwide and it is £117 for one year worldwide inc the US.

Some insurance companies require you to have an EHIC, so check the small print.
You can sometimes get treatment quicker if you have your EHIC card with you as they dont need to check what cover you've got.
Its free, so makes sense to have it, along with travel insurance.

I pay £103.00 for a family world wide annual insurance.

Good to hear some people do go on the yearly policies.

I pay a very low rate for my AXA policy, which has some little or no surcharges for some items.

I also always carry a copy in my wallet for verification by authorities should I get into trouble. My mother also has a copy should something happen and they have to contact next of kin. Sounds a bit morbid but if something happened and they need to act asap, it does make sense.

I also checked about the E111 and now EHIC and know that I do not need one to complement my policy.

Good point Peter, I forgot to mention that some policies require you to have an EHIC. In some cases if you have one you don't need to pay the excess on the policy, but all policies vary so be sure to read the small print on your own one.

Out of interest, I was going to recommend the website http://www.confused.com where you can search for the best value travel insurance. However before they will give you a quote you have to confirm that you do not have any pre-existing medical conditions and also that the holiday booked is not a cruise, so not much use to members of this forum!

Whether or not you have travel insurance an EHIC is recommended as it is more widely recognised. AXA do indeed 'strongly advise' you have one.

It takes a few mins to apply, so why not?

Yes you may be required by insurance companies to use this option of free healthcare first.

Hi..yes my hubby gets free travel insurance for all the family through his bank account too (Royal bank of Scotland) - the policy even covered us when we went to Kenya (safari etc)..

Might be worth checking all the leaflets that come with the statements !! - you might be entitled and don't know it

I have an annual policy too - but it excludes any cost that could be covered by EHIC so we take both.

Not sure if this is a growing trend but on our most recent booking, we had to state our next of kin, and also quote the name of the insurance company, policy number and emergency telephone number when we booked. It seems a good idea, and luckily I had the info to hand as I keep an index card with that sorta stuff written on it, and put it im my travel wallet so it's always to hand, even when we go ashore - can't be too careful :o

I have got the EHIC does this mean, if for instance if I got tonsilites on my med cruise i could see a doctor and get antibiotics with out paying anything?

You cannot use your EHIC to see the ships doctor as they are all private [and expensive] You can claim on your travel insurance but you have to pay upfront and claim your costs when you get home.

Hi There,

On Princess if you are sick you do not need to pay to see the doctor, if you are ill that is different.

They want to make sure that you are not going to spread anything nasty.

Hi There,

Insurance at over £100 for world wide is expensive, use internet price comparison and you can get it as low as £75 per couple.

Unless you can find it cheaper.

Hello
We have free travel insurance with Alliance and Leicester because my salary is paid into our account but we have just received the renewal and we are only covered for European travel and need to pay an additional premium for the rest of the World. Perhaps worth checking if you are going outside European (perhaps new regulations only apply at next renewal)
