I know there is already a sticky on this (and I could post in it but nobody but Nette would be able to reply to it though as it is locked), but can somebody tell me whether the Egyptian language is similar to that spoken in Morocco.
As I worked out of Morocco for a bit some years ago, I could make use of it but don't want to sound like a plonker doing it.
Shukran!

Some phrases out of Libra brochure:-
Hello - salam alaykum
goodbye - ma es salama
please - men fadlak
thankyou - shukran
yes - naam
no - la
good morning - sabah el kheir
good evening/night - masa el kheir
how are you - ez zayyak
very well - kua yiss
I want - ayez
sorry - assef
telephone - teliphune
taxi - taxi.
So if you just meant "Thank you" it's similar
If not, "pardon?"
Those phrases sound similar to the ones I learned in Tangier.
The "base" language in both countries is Arabic. There will be some local changes but the stuff you learned in Morroco will be understood in Egypt in general.
i worked in saudi for a few years and speak a bit of arabic, everytime i go to egypt most of the people understand me so you should be ok

Thanks guys for the reply.
You should be ok but I should mention that the 'Arabic' spoken in Magreb countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) can be a mixture of Arabic/French/Berber which can be difficult for an Egyptian or other non-Magreb Arab to understand. But that shouldn't deter you, in fact Egyptians really like it when tourists try to communicate with them in Arabic. It shows you've put in the effort. If worse comes to worse, most Egyptians speak or at least have basic understanding skills in English.
Just found my notes when I was in Morocco
I scribbled down that the number "two" in Morocco was spoken as "zush" which is totally different to what is given on this site: http://touregypt.net/translat.htm
