Well after all the worrying about what the weather will be like, and what our apartments will be like etc etc I can honestly say all in all the holiday was fab.

Resort ideal for people with walking difficulties etc, mostly flat, although I did seem to be cutting in and out of bars to get through the resort!

Weather was great, even the overcast days we're very warm but out of 14 days I'd say that 12 were very hot and sunny.

We stayed in the Miami Apartments, which I was concerned looked quite cheap and cheerful. It is undoubtedly fairly basic, but it is also clean and tidy, the maids come pretty regularly to clean and I would definitely stay there again. On our second night a man actually fell off of a balcony, which was obviously very concerning. I have no idea of the circumstances, but I would say that this shouldn't concern parents taking children at all as I found them to be safe and the barriers high. The pools in both the Miami Apartments and the Hotel were deep, however the Hotel pool was quite ridiculous as I couldn't touch the floor in the majority of it, and at 5'8 I'm not the shortest. As a fairly good swimmer I did actually appreciate the fact that it wasn't completely filled with millions of children and I could actually swim up and down.
As we booked Self Catering and stayed in the Apartments, we decided to try the hotel buffet, so for 64 euros, for 5 days we had breakfast and dinner in there. The food was ok, I'm a vegetarian and I didn't starve, for breakfast they had pancakes, a full english, cereal, a few cakes, fruit, bread, cheeses and ham, yoghurt etc. The dinner was different every night, with a fair selection and also childrens choices which included chips (of course), chicken nuggets, fish fingers, quiche etc (not surprisingly it was mainly men eating out of their, haha). Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolate and Fruit Juices are included with you breakfast and at dinner time you are served drinks at your table (water and soft drinks 1.70e). To be honest although it was satisfactory we did all say that after 5 days we'd had more than enough of that type of food. Breakfast times were something like 8 - 10.30am and dinner was 7 - 9.30pm (I think). You can also pay for just breakfast at 6e and dinner at 10e. I would not recommend the apartments bar which fronts on to the beach, the food was nothing special and none of us seemed to get what we had asked for.

We didn't do too many trips to be honest, we went on the glass bottom boat, we didn't see anything at all, there was a shipwreck but it didn't look like anything except a piece of metal covered in sea mould, and as I felt quite sea sick I didn't really enjoy that. We went to the waterpark, which was ok, its not the biggest but some of the rides were excellent (I think its 17e if you book your tickets at the hotel but 19e if you pay on the door.) We did try to go on the train ride around the beaches however when we turned up at 10am (it's supposed to leave at 10.30) it was already full and chugging away! Be warned, get there v early!

Food and drink in Es Cana was neither cheap nor expensive, there are many bars and restaurants but we found that the food was quite similar in all of them. Normally I like to go to a variety of different restaurants which I didn't really find, however I will stress that I didn't search in all the side streets or venuture too far looking. For the people that like to eat food that they know there is a bar/restaurant (I think its called Mar Vent - next door to Charlies) which has a Weatherspoons type menu, ie Cajun Chicken and Chips, Cottage Pie etc etc, also as part of this restaurant you can order baguettes at the side bar, they were delicious (and they also had a good range of cakes). I would definitely not recommend the Chinese which is as you walk down the road towards the Hippy Market, about 100 yards up from the Indian Takeaway. My rice tasted of salt and nothing else, the spring rolls were tasteless and the curry wasn't much better (I was v disappointed as I love a good Chinese).

The beach in Es Cana is very nice and ideal for children, clean, flat and the sea is quite calm and shelving. 2 people who were in our group were stung by jelly fish, although I'm not sure if this is because they were further out in the sea. We didn't use the sunbeds on the beach as we spent most of our time on Lilo's in the sea, but I believe they were 3.50e each. Whilst on the beach we spent a fair amount of time in the beach bar Tipic (especially my husband), Jerry in there is very friendly, but the big guy with the frizzy hair was a right misery.

If anyone has any questions please post them and I'll answer whatever I can.

according to the local press the balcony faller was sleepwalking!

Oh, I did wonder as its not the sort of balcony you'd fall off easily. How awful!

7 th visit to Es Cana in 5 yrs and probably my last , so many changes in a short time, 4th stay at the Ereso still a nice clean hotel with wonderful staff , but found it strange to be outnumbered by about 4-1 by Italian holiday makers some were ok but some very rude , also the "animation team" was made up of 5 ... 4 of whom were Italian and 1 German, they could nearly all speak English but a lot gets lost in translation. A lot of the trees across the road from the Ereso have been lopped down, by all accounts to make way for the Hippy Market that is being relocated or so we heard. I always stay B&B and eat out in Es Cana , usually at the Mar Vent and have always praised up the place , but sadly its standards have dropped , I ordered a cheese and tomato baguette, which in the past would comprise of Spanish ham and thickly sliced firm tomato , but this time it was ordinary ham and chopped tomatoes spread on the baguette , I heard someone compare it to a Wetherspoonspub and menu like we have back in England. I Do hope this has not put anyone off going to Es cana , ii spent 10 days here before moving on to Santa Eulalia which I will write about separatley .. cheers for now ....Pad

Very sad to hear

Also my favourite resort, but perhaps we are now seeing the results of the "cost saving" measures estblishments like the Mar Vent have had to take to try and survive against the AI Hotels

(All as predicted by John - Beachcomber Bar Mojacar - many months ago)

Why did the cheese and tomato baguette used to come with Spanish ham and tomato?

Because Es Cana is in Spain perhaps?

I've holidayed in Spanish resorts about 25 times and if I've asked for a cheese and tomato sandwich that's what I've got.

PS: Last Spanish holiday was May to Es Cana.

Balconies always worry me. I keep the kids off ours unless we're out there, being little they only have to climb on a chair and the unthinkable could happen.

We stayed at the Caribe (review soon I promise) but met guests at the Panorama which is a Thomson Gold for over 16's only and all were very pleased with it. It's in an excellent location just below our hotel and right by the beach and resort centre, food was said to be very good and some of the couples from our hotel went to see the entertainment there and said it was very good.

I pretty much agree with someones-angel-uk about the resort and was a little disappointeed at the choice of restauarants on offer which we found to be too British as am used to a more cosmopolitan flavour which we did miss. Also went to Mar Vent, probably one of the best (reps eat there!!) but very true in just like Weatherspoons.

Good luck with your choice.

LOL I'm sure Paddy Jennings meant a cheese and tomato baguette, but if he didn't, wow what a surprise, especially for the veggies amongst us :yikes

We enjoyed our stay at the Caribe in Es Cana but have to say wouldn't go again. Couldn't say anything bad about the resort, there was enough going on and it was quite clean with a lovely beach for the kids but didn't have that x factor for me, just didn't fall in love with it. :( I actually found it to be too British for my taste and had trouble finding any nice restaurants, certainly nothing authentic. We did go to the Mar Vent which was fine for English food, the ribs were nice though varied enormously in portion from one visit to the next!! I did find some of the waiters there surley though and found Tenerife last year far more friendlier and also a lot cheaper to eat out at with much more variety.

Sorry confused myself i did order a ham and tomato baguette, just thought the portions and quality were not up to the standard as set in the Mar Vent in previous years, and the waiters were moody , maybe struggling not sure but a smile costs nothing ..Pad

Does anyone know if there still is a Tapas bar on the same road as Popeyes. I hope there is as this is the first place we tried Tapas years ago and have always wnated to return. We stayed in Santa Eulalia at the end of October 2 years ago and we had a trip into Es Cana but a few places had shut for the winter including this bar.

Well I`m flying out in the morning and planning to go to the Tapas bar for lunch as soon as we get there. Will update on my return.
