We went to Sarawak very recently and had a fabulous holiday with Kuoni Travel Collection. As usual we bought some Ringitts before we went and took some sterling to exchange there. Luckily the sterling was new notes, or at least in good condition. I say luckily because others on the holiday found that neither the hotels nor the licenced money exchangers would accept any notes that were ripped or had writing on them.
So - if you take notes - take new ones !
Does this happen elsewhere ?
I always make sure the notes are in reasonable condition. I always just take £20 notes for exchange as this is the denomination they like. You could also take stirling travellors cheques (I use £100 denomjnations for these as it is easier to keep track of serial numbers) you may loose a couple of cents per pound (about 2 ringget per £100), but the added security is handy.
