Sad loss of life, but you take a risk doing these things. Its a different culture and country; like those who ride scooters without helmets. You take a risk, if an accident happens, it happens.

The UK is such a nanny state now. Don't you think driving a car say in India or anothr country where traffic rules go out the window is risky. You are never safe, not even stepping out the front door at home. Hundreds died in the Madrid aeroplane; they all though they were safe.

People need to get over this and stop accusing jeep safaris of being unsafe. I've been on one from Sarigerme and another in Kusdasi recently and felt fine. I even stood up on some sections knowing I was taking a risk; but that is what you do.

So get off your high horses calling them dangerous...

If people take risks then fine, but they must deal with the consequences and accept the harsh truth if anything does go wrong and I suppose live with the guilt if their child dies.

Hi i have just returned from the Holiday Village in Sarigerme. and whilst there a father and daughter were tragically killed whilst taking part in a jeep safari trip on Monday 18th, booked through sarigerme tours. The jeep safari involves water fights between jeeps, according to reports it seems the driver was distracted with water in his face and had to swerve to avoid a parked tractor, the back of the jeep took the full impact of the crash. More info on the net, news and english papers.

I have just got back from turkey and although we didnt do the jeep safari we wanted to but just didnt get round to it.
But i must say reading about the accident has put me off and i wont be doing it next year ... but

you really cant slate the family for it even considering how much grief they are going through... this always happens when a tragedy happens on hols... look at the madeleine mccann case.

People are sooo hollier than though and i always think, there but for the grace of god.............

Kids die every year in car accidents in this country but every day parents are strapping their kids into cars.... doesnt stop them does it

Firstly I would like to express my sadness at the tragic loss suffered by the family concerned, and secondly share my experience of a recent Jeep Safari.
My family and I returned from Marmaris on sunday. We and our friends (4 adults, 5 Children) also went on a jeep safari after hearing how great they were (my youngest is 5, and after enquiring on HT whether jeep safari would be suitable for him, and being told it would decided to go for it). Big mistake!
Our Jeep and driver weren't road worthy, no seatbelts, hole in the floor of the jeep etc. The jeep kept coughing & spluttering, and when you're driving along cliffs with the jeep rolling back because the driver couldn't find gears it's terrifying. To top it off our driver was new that day, didn't speak a word of English, he lost the other jeeps within an hour of setting off. He also thought it was funny to mess about swerving on the main road, he pulled out into oncoming traffic twice, (and I mean when the other traffic was right on top of us).
When we were finally reunited with the other jeeps, they had to call for another driver and a mechanic from Marmaris. Whilst I realise we were unlucky in having the worst Jeep and Driver, I feel that other people should be aware of what can happen.
We booked this trip from a shop outside our hotel as we were told that trips booked through reps were exactly the same but more expensive. We now feel that any excursions we decide to go on in future will be booked through First Choice etc, as they apparently are goverened by our Health and Safety laws.

you say that, but its so innacurate.

Much as I (and people I associate with) wouldnt leave a 6 year old alone with two babies whilst on the lash, I wouldnt take an 8 year old into a situation that involved standing up in a speeding jeep with no protection.

Personally i dont see this thread as the place for this kind of debate, blaming or judgement.

What happened is a tradgedy. Very sad indeed. And i re-iterate my heart goes out to all involved.

Exactly, people are getting off the point, this is a terrible tragedy and we should all be thinking of that poor family, it is so sad.

hmmm....

Sure, its a tragedy, no one disputes that, but the only relevance here is that it happened in a country/holiday resort we all have an interest in, doing an activity many of us may do or have done.

If you narrow it down to the fact that someone has been killed in an accident, most people will think, how sad, did I know them, move on.

Surely, the debate may inform people of the dangers, and prevent others doing something that is clearly asking for trouble.

There are always some people on every forum who seem to jump on there soap box and forget the real reason that the topic was posted in the first place .It is odds on that the people involved in this tragic accident are members of h/t and will read the insensitive comments being posted please remember that .

My heart goes out to this family at this time.

I have read a report from Turkey on another forum and apparently the driver was squirted with sea water that the person in their wisdom decided to put in their gun. Now it is the driver that is in trouble.

With regard to saftey: everyone has there own opinion about it, but these jeef safari's are done daily all over Turkey all through the season. If it was as unsafe as people think then surely there would have been more accidents!! This is what it is a tragic accident, if the driver had been squirted with normal water and not salt water he would have been able to see the truck. You know how sore it makes your eyes and the stinging that you get from sea water in Turkey as it is so salty, Sometimes it isn't down to safety it is down to other peoples stupidity!!!!!

Have you ever thought that if they were not squirting water then it would not have been in his eyes atall and if they were told to wear seat belts which is the law in turkey then there is a better than good chance that these people would not have been killed .Ultimately the driver is at fault no matter what he is in charge of the vehicle and technically he is guilty of culpable homicide .

But it wasn't the passengers that were squirting the water. But i do see what you are saying and me myself i would wear a seat belt. I always do here and my other half will not even start the car if people haven't got there seat belts on and that includes adults. I just meant that he would have stood a better chance of still being about to see where he was going if it hadn't have been sea water.

Reading the article made my blood run cold- we did a jeep safari last year in Bulgaria and it was great fun. The girls were desperate to do it this year in Turkey but First Choice had stopped running them and the quad bikes as they didn't have seat belts- this was the 11th August so, presumably not as a result of this accident which I guess happened after that. It really is tragic and easy to say seat belts should have been worn, shouldn't have been shooting on the main roads etc, but nothing can turn the clock back. Everyone on that trip will have to live with the consequences, which is awful. I just hope that whichever tour operator they were with, despite presumably not running the trip themselves have given their customers all the support they needed. We've all let our guard down on holiday to some degree, and should just be grateful that nothing as tragic as this has happened to us.

My sympathies are with all involved.
