Hey,
Me and my Girlfriend have been to Turkey the past few years (and are going again this year!), but we are also going to Greece with my parents.
As none of us have been here before, I've got one or two small questions...
Can you haggle when shopping, like you can in Turkey?
Is it more relaxed than Turkey? (i.e., do the shops/restaurants have staff outside, trying to entice you in?
Do the restaurants have entertainment on?
Would £400 each for the week be enough spending money? We take this each to Turkey, and it's more than enough - but Turkey is so cheap....
I'm not trying to compare Greece to Turkey, just a bit curious to what we should be expecting!
Many thanks,
Dan
We have been to Turkey twice and Greece about 40 times. Generally you are not expected to haggle like you do in Turkey and there is nothing like the hassle you experience in Turkey either. Entertainment in tavernas if any, is usually a Greek night, occasionally spontaneous entertainment in the form of music and dancing breaks out among large family groups. If you are self catering £400 a week each sounds like plenty but its not as cheap as Turkey and a lot depends on how touristy your chosen destination is
That's great. Thanks for the quick reply.
And no its probably more expensive than Turkey (and this will depend on whereabouts you choose in Greece) but its still cheap compared to what we are used to in the UK!
Where are you thinking of?
We're staying at the Hotel Mediteranee in Tsilivi. Few mixed reports, but generally looks good!
Are there any "rules" on tipping?
Tend to tip quite heavily for food in Turkey, due the wages not being too great, to say the least.
Many thanks
The general rule is 10% of the bill, however, we only ever tip if we recieve good service (which you usually do in Greece). But watch out for service charges, you may not want to tip so much.
you cant haggle for anything any more than you would here! greece is generally relaxed with not much trying to entice you into restaurants. except in the biug resorts where it can be a bit of a nightmare. eg argassi or laganas in zante.
greece is no longer a cheap destination really. the way i work pricing isthis .., it is cheaper than the uk but you can expect to pay in euros for things what you pay in pounds here. ie if you would expect to pay 10 pounds for lunch here, you can expect it to be 10 euros. so 400 pounds is 600 euros. if 600 pounds would be enough for you here, then you'll be fine.
except if you want to eat lots of fish, which is expensive. drink can be a bit expensive in trendy ars like it is here, though there are usually cheap ones as well. again it depends where you go.
i have never really come across many service charges. traditionally greeks didnt tip - they used to leave whatever coins were left in their change, which in the days of drachmas wasnt very much. however, tourism has been in greece a long time now so tips are more expected. but greeks certainly would not leave a 10 percent tip. they would leave a couple of euros.
hope that makes sense!
My Guy likes the local Mythos beer (he hates amstel.)
Fish is quite expensive but we dont really have it as Im a veggie and the boss likes his steaks or an occasional pizza.
Stuffed peppers with rice is my personal favourite.
All you have to remember with the currency is that 10 euro is roughly 7 quid, 1 euro 70 pence approx.
The one thing that is different is the hassle level. Much more pleasant and laid back in Crete trying to choose a restaurant than in Turkey, or a hand bag or shoes.
