Hi everyone...
Last august hubby, myself and two teenagers holidayed in Akumal mexico which was fantastic (first holiday in 9 years)...not one complaint, I snorkelled with the turtles and fish but never got out of my depth as even though I am drawn to the sea I am terrified of depths and big sharks basically...lol! BUT I was assured by divers in a mexican forum that there was no big sharks where we were going, something about the water is too warm and they couldn't get in the reef apparantly...anyway as long as I could see the bottom of the sea and touch it most of the time I was fine...only had one slight panic when we saw a huge school of fish and I knew that was where the baracuda hung out, my daughter saw him but I didn't....all and all I had a fantastic time!
Right...end of next april/beginning of May 2008 hubby and myself are planning a holiday on our own..no kids, sri lanka tour first week then the Maldives the second week to relax, they both look amazing!
right, I know the baby sharks hang out near shore in the maldives which I don't think will bother me but will I beable to see many marine life without going into deep water in the Maldives? Will it wow me like it did in Mexico? You could snorkel very close to the beach and see a great variety!
I do admire divers, It must be amazing to go deeper and see all the marine life that you don't see in the shallows but that aint going to be me I'm afraid! I've been watching some holiday videos of divers swimming with manta rays and that must be breath taking and a beautiful experiance!

In answer to your questions it will depend on which island you are spending your 2nd week. ie does it have a house reef but in most cases to see the greatest variety you will have to snorkel in fairly deep water, as the coral near the beaches is bleached or damaged. A lot of the islands may loan/rent you a life jacket which may make you feel a little bit more secure and allow you to venture out of your depth or you can buy a blow up one from a local dive shop. Cant compare against Mexico never been. We were at Biyahdoo in June and the house reef was extraordinary , my partner is not a diver and said its the best they had ever been on and whilst there was plenty of reef fish eg Nemos and others near the beach, the best was if you snorkeled off the wall of the reef which was clear water. Some islands do take snorkelers to the Manta points so you may even get a chance to snorkel above them if you are really lucky
