I am going to Goa in December for the first time, & wonder if any experienced Goa fans can answer these questions?
I am staying at the Osborne Hotel, & most reviews I have read have been pretty positive. However, I have read a few warning about robberies from the safe deposit boxes at this hotel. This seems to be quite a commen occurence & is a bit worrying. Anybody heard anything about this?
Also, our tour operator is offering a trip to Agra & Jaipur for £550. Anybody know if trips like this are available locally?
Thanks
Hazel
Stayed at the Osborne a couple of times and had no concers about the safety deposit boxes, they are right beside the reception which is manned 24hrs. They sell you a new padlock on arrival and it's a pretty stout one but if you wanted an even bigger one there is a padlock shop half way down the main street located just round the corner from Romano's the opticians Just be sure to pick a quiet time when you use the box and be doubly sure when you relock it. Daytrippers, a local tour company owned by an English couple, Eddie & Enid Foster do the trip you are after and you will find it's much cheaper than the tour companies and better organied too. They give you a variety of options for doing the trip either flying or rail and they are all cheaper than the reps tours, their office is only a few hundred yards from the Osborne, they have a web site you can source from Google, Hope this helps Alan
English run travel agent? for sure this will be more expensive than going to a Goan. There is an excellent local travel agent almost opposite Jungle Village. Please use the local business, you will find they know more and can offer better deals. Plenty of Goans travel and the travel agents reflect this.
we stayed at the osbourne 2 yrs ago & a lady had her safe broken into then. at that time the reception staff did not check who was going in & out of the safe room and they were not the safes that had the 2 key opening just padlocks as said. they tightened up security for a day or two before going back to the lax way it was before.
we are going back to the osbourne again in 2 weeks ( ) and am glad to hear they are now providing better locks for the safe.
i dont think for a minute that it was a goan who robbed the tourist more likely an unsavoury countryman/woman but be careful & as said make doubly sure you have clicked your padlock shut before you leave the room.
we never use tour operators trips they are ALWAYS more expensive than what you can get once there.
have a great time
What we have always done is provide our own lock for the safe, that means there are no duplicate keys floating around, also now we are in rented accomadation we only use the Nationwide flexiaccount, so we draw out money as ans when required, its much safer thn haveing loads of cash.
Thanks, everyone, for your help.
I stayed at Osborne last March/April and the reception staff only allowed 1 person in the locker room at a time and I had to sign a book with date, time and room number, it would seem that they've increased their security proceedures.
