hi
I am thinking of going to NW for 3 weeks this summer. Will probably stay beginning & end period with relative (WA, nr Portland OR).
So I'm thinking of flying direct to Seattle & taking short flight to Portland (and visa versa on return). This is the shortest, most direct route I can find (don't really want to mess about changing).
I have only done one long(ish) haul flight as adult - budget Barbados, 7-8 hrs grim, cramped flight (I'm 6"1.5").
Firstly, how much different would economy be on a BA/Virgin 747 flight (compared to cramped, non-747 flight to Barbados) ? Similar or better ?
A return economy (Seattle) would be around £600, but almost double for premium-eco. Would it be worth paying the difference ?
Secondly, what could realistically do in 10 days or so, on West coast ? Could I take in most of the important stuff (I'm more into natural world than cities etc.) in this time frame ? Probably a mix of flying & driving (or possibly coach/rail ?) ...
I was vaguely planning on a kind of loop which would somehow get me back to my uncle's a few days before flying home ...
Maybe an alternative would be outward to NW, and back from further south e.g. LA ? Would this be more expensive / more hassle ?
thanks

Just on the flight to Seattle question, I think you'll find there's not a lot of difference in comfort I'm afraid. I don't know who you flew to Barbados with (if it was Monarch then the others would be better)!
There's not a lot of difference between any of the major trans-atlantic airlines any more -
Virgin 747's are normally 32" pitch
BA are 31"
The American companies such as American Airlines, United, Delta and US Airways are all 31 or 32" in Economy too.
I personally have always enjoyed flying with AA (American airlines) but most require a change/stopover of a couple of hours at their US Hub (for example, Delta is Atlanta, NorthWest airlines is Minneapolois, AA is Dallas I think)
I would concentrate on getting a good price, from and to the airports you want and also make sure that the airline you go with have a good entertainment system - ie: seatback TV's, it's a long flight to the West coast so you want to have some entertainment!
Cheers,
TC
I was beginning to see that eco seat pitch pattern emerging from cross-referencing my flight searches to seatguru.com !
I must say I am getting tempted by paying the extra for prem-eco on the BA direct 9 1/2 hr flight ... about £1150 though
Can justify it (a bit) by the money I'll save staying with my uncle for some of the trip.
Do you know what the seat pitch is for these (and would it be worth the upgrade) ?
EDIT Seatguru gives 38" vs 31" .... hmm, trying to work out if 86 quid per inch is worth it
Actually I've just found a direct BMI prem-eco for £1018 - from Manchester (via airline-network.co.uk ).
Thomas Cook Airlines via Canadian Affair fly to Vancouver and there economy seats have 33" seat pitch. Plus they have seat back TV's too. Have a look at Zoom to Vancouver too as they offer a premium service on there Manchester flights at a fairly good price.
The BMI flight you have found does not fly direct to Seattle or Portland it will operate via Chicago or Las Vegasd and will connect on to United Airlines in Economy. Also Premium Economy will only be as far as Chicago or Las Vegas.
yep, realised the bmi flight was not direct after looking at it again ...
shame because a 49" pitch all the way to Seattle for about a grand would have been great !
will look into Vancouver route - 200 mile+ drive to Portland from there though ...
