Yes, they are away from the entrance and exit areas - at the far end of the terminal building - but nobody seemed to be enforcing it last month. There are large 'No Smoking' signs under the canopies by the entrance and exit doors but they were being ignored by large crowds of smokers while I was waiting for a taxi by the taxi office at South Terminal. After being on a transatlantic overnight flight I would have really liked to wait out in the fresh air but this was impossible unless you were happy being surrounded by smokers. Even in the short time I was there by the time the taxi arrived I was already wheezing and my clothes smelled of it.

I was taken by surprise by this - either the 'No Smoking' signs are enforced or smokers don't ignore them at Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports because there simply weren't the large clusters of smokers at the doors when I've travelled to/from them since the ban came into force in Scotland. I'd assumed that once the ban came into froce in England that the same would apply. Anybody who suffers from asthma should take note that in my experience it is now impossible to enter or exit Gatwick South without having to make your way through large clusters of smokers.

And I've made a note of this as well - won't say whether I'm delighted with the news or not.

I am a smoker too, but, if I can't have one, well thats fine. Ill manage....I am happy to go to the designated spot, just happy they do have one. :D

there should be no designated spot outside.
Outside is outside, and if that means I'm stood outside the premises, then I am not breaking the law.
Outside does not have a roof or walls and I'll be :swear if someone is going to tell me where to smoke outside.

does anyone know if there is a similar area at the north terminal?

You are not allowed to smoke outside hospital entrances so I should think the same rule can be applied at airports.

I for one do not want to have to either enter or exit an airport through a fog of smoke.

Not fully sure, maybe someone can clarify, but I think you have to be 15 metres away from an entrance :?: :!:

Hi, as a regular at Gatwick, last week you could smoke immediately outside both North and South Terminals. I am there again tomorrow and will endeavour to find time while I am away to post update. Cheers. Tonyt

I think it's something like 17m and the fact there's a canopy present might also mean it's classed as partially enclosed in which case those signs are there for a reason....to adhere to the new smoking law.

I remember reading that the smoking area has to be a certain distance away from entrances and exits due to smoke entereing the enclosed building. I therefore assume that anyone caught by the EHO etc. would be issued with a fine :?

So go outside of the canopy area, either by 15 or 17 metres, fine, I think

The recent smoking ban that came into effect in July governs the smoking in public enclosed places.

Other Companies/organisations might have additional smoking restrictions in place to which we are asked to adhere to.

Whether these Companies/organisations police this ban is another matter.

At the end of the day, we're all going onto their premises and we should adhere to their policies, smoking or otherwise.

Anybody not adhering to their policies, should not complain of the consequences.

Since when did smoking outside ever create a fog of smoke.?
Maybe you should ask the drivers to run the taxis on lemon juice, while you're at it.

When you have 20 plus smokers all congregating under a low canopy/portico and the rising smoke gets trapped under it on a calm day.
