Trade unions in Spain have reached agreement with the government this morning to provide a minimum of between 20% and 40% of international flights during a general strike on 29 September.
The protest against austerity cuts is expected to leave at least 20% of European flights and 40% of other international flights unaffected.
Between 25% and 30% of train services should also operate.
Under Spanish law, workers in certain sectors must provide a minimum level of service and the unions must agree in advance with the government on what those minimum levels should be.
The scale of disruption is difficult to predict, as non-striking key workers in the air or rail industry could encounter problems reaching their place of work due to disruption or protest on the roads.
There are conflicting polls about the likely impact of strike action, but much prominence is being given to one poll which shows that although 58% of Spaniards feel that the general strike is justified, only 9% said that they definitely planned to take part. However, analysts predict that support on the day will be much higher.
Airlines have yet to respond to latest developments, and may not do so until the current general strike in France has ended.
