Cartman - congrats on the puppy - think it is great. My dearly departed doglet Fred (hence Fredthedog) was a Battersea special and he was loved by all and was a real celeb in Notting Hill before he went to green place in the sky. I know a lot of people/children in India need held but so do the animals - good on you!

Re the shakedown at the airport for heavy cases All of we regulars know that all the beach sellers and massage girls have to pay the police a regular bribe if they wish to continue operating and I would be amazed if the porters at the airport were not squeezed in the same way The amount of pound coins they get will, in large part, I'm sure, finish up in some officials pocket , then in turn up the ladder and so on. It's a sad fact of Indian life I'm afraid and I,m not sure if it will ever change As far as the demands , you've just got to say no in a very loud voice. Alan

Hey Cartman,
I so admire you for what you have done, welcome to England Rani. I am doing the opposite, obviously you love animals so you will understand.
We are taking 2 dogs (Boxer/GSD)George aged 12,Keano aged 10( Jack Russell) and Frankie our cat to Goa in Jan it's such a big step for them, all the times we have been to Goa they have stayed at home with our grown up sons so have never been in kennels. How the hell do you explain to them. So scared they will not survive the flight H...E...L...P

How many of you think the visa situation is a major reason for potential visitors staying away from Goa? And what impact would visa on arrival make do you think?
Reply
Fiona, the answer to that is...... :bhead , :yikes ...total confusion.....your first week would be spent at Dabolim airport sorting out the red-tape...please, NEVER visa on arrival :no :no :no
Reply
should have phrased that better! I meant if it was relatively hassle free getting visa on arrival!

You know better than that Fiona.....theres no such thing as hassle free in Goa where paperwork is concerned... :rofl

But...just imagine if it was hassle free- don't you think that would attract more visitors to Goa? The situation at the moment must put off a lot of people. I would suspect that most of you Goa regulars would be happy to put up with the current situation.

I may be thinking of myself, but,do we need more visitors in Goa :hmmm ....ive been going to Goa now for 5 years (10th visit at New Year) and even in that short time i can see a vast change in the place...perhaps another 5 years at the same rate of change will spoil it beyond recognition...some may say its progress, but i go to Goa for how it is now or was.....if i wanted crowded beaches,English bars everywhere and hyped up prices i can go to Benidorm.... :shrug

your babies will be fine,do they have to go into a quarentine centre in goa,if so were,at least once they are there you will be able to go see them all the time,we found that rani was really looked after from bombay to here she was taken off the plane at heathrow, walked played with then a couple ogf hours later fly to mancester were she was met by the quarentine staff,
we did look into buying a place in goa and if we had of done we thought abouty setting up kennels, then when if any ex pats wanted to visit uk they would know there pets were safe ,but at this moment in time we cant complete the 183 days in goa and buying an older property that we wanted seems such a huge gamble that we not going to do it now
so we will just have to go on more goa hols instead ,that way we can carry on helping the stray dogs and the children

Well said Noggin, We've retreated from Spain, Majorca, Cyprus, and Turkey as they became swamped and came to Goa in the early nineties. We too can see the changes every year and wonder how long Goa is going to last before it too gets spoiled. Definitley no to visas on arrival, anyone who knows India can forsee the scene at Dabolim Keep in mind though if you were an Indian National attemping to holiday in the U.K. you would have even more hassle visa wise than we do and it would cost you £65 as well for your visa!!! I wonder if it is similar to what has happened to parts of Thailand? Pre HT days I went to Koh Samui to a place called Chaweng. A colleague had gone there 5 years before and I was looking forward to mixing with the locals, eating in beach huts, walking down unmade roads... I didn't recognise the place she had raved about :(
Mind you, I did find somewhere else on the island. Maybe if the North of Goa gets too busy- the south might become the place to be?

we thought about trying south goa next year

Well said Noggin.

Cartman, I stayed in South Goa for the first time this year.

The five other times I stayed in Candolim/Calgungute.

My husband who has been more than me, said that the South is more like the North used to be, if you see what I mean.

It was wonderful, you can walk on the beautiful beach and see two or three other people, you can lie on your sunbed and just chill out, or in my case blob out.

There aren't that many restaurants down there but if there aren't the tourists then there wouldn't be.

We never let the porters touch our cases and never give them any money. however on arrivale at the airport I went to the the toilet the man there gives you a paper towel to dry your hands after which I gave him Rs10 to which he replied no Rs100, I took the Rs 10 off him as if I was going to give him Rs100 but did not and just walked out with him looking stuned.
Its not the monet but the princible maybe next time he will be happy to keep the Rs10.
