Hi, going to Goa end Dec for 2 weeks can anybody tell me whether its worth taking dressy clothes and high heels or is it much more relaxed than that???
Ta
You can wear what you like. We take dressy clothes, the Goans like you to dress up. We also take high heels as we always use taxis at night but I know others say not to take them. There are no strict rules, you will feel comfortable in whatever you are used to wearing. There are some really nice restaurants now which I feel deserve dressing up for. Besides which we love the contrast after being like a couple of beach bums all day.
Like BrenLiz, I like to feel different to how I am during the day but I don't do the high heels! Took them when i first went to Goa several years ago, wore them for about an hour, took them off and was barefooted the rest of the night! Haven't bothered since and I love killer heels at home
Whatever you decide will be great anyway, because as long as you feel good, you'll look good!
If you go somewhere like East meets West, Soueymans Kitchen etc, taxi there and back fine. If though you want to walk somewhere else the red dust roads make heels really difficult . Take some nice evening clothes but also remember that the dust gets everywhere and is difficult to get out especially from anything white often we would also end up on the beach, once again heels a no no, I took nice sparkely flip flop type shoes for when we went somewhere special
I don't dress up as much as I did the first couple of years we went to Goa. I usually take a few nice tops and a couple of skirts that can be mixed and matched also had a couple of nice dresses made at Macs tailors which I may take with me. High heels as others have said are probably best worn only when you go by taxi as the roads and "pavements" aren't good. You'll be doing a lot of "walking in the gutter" over there and the roads drop away (for water run off in monsoon season) so you don't want to risk a broken ankle. Also, with only 15kgs luggage allowance (hold luggage) we will all have to be selective about what we need to take this time.
fizzy,
Thomsons is 25kg which includes hand luggage (maximum hand luggage 10kg)
Thomas Cook is 15kg (hold) + 5kg maximum hand luggage
although Thomas Cook will let you add more for a price....
Keith
this is i know but thomas cook only allow 15kgs on all bookings, you can upgrade to 20kgs for £25 pp on long haul flights, I have booked with them for March and I am unsure whether to pay the extra or not I shouldn't need to really as I am only going for a week.
If I can manage with the inflight bag then you can surely manage with that AND 15kg
Back on topic..............I dont take too many dressy uppy clothes to Goa, but I take some smart white linen pants and a couple of nice skirts, I like to take quite a few different black strappy vests which I like to dress up with nice sparkly bangles etc...
Mazzy....I'm flying with Thomas Cook. 15kgs hold and 5kgs hand. Not a problem as only going for a week (in November) but next March for 3 weeks might present a problem. Will have to be even more selective about the clothes I take for THAT trip. I'll probably leave a few things with our friends when I return this time then I will have enough for when I get there in March.

was thinking of dying it??
Will depend a lot on what the dres is made of - if it's cotton, linen or viscose and says it's washable it will be a breeze. All 3 dye well using Dylon's machine dye BUT if there's any chance it will shrink in the wash then it will shrink when you try and dye it.
If it's made of silk then it will dye well too but you'll need to use Dylon's cold water dye for dyeing by hand. A bit messier than doing it in the washing machine but still easy to do.
However. if it's made of anything that contains polyester or nylon then it won't take up the dye properly - it will be a literally pale imitations of the colour on the pack! And that includes the thread used to stitich the garment together! Even if the fabric is dyable - if it's stitched together with polyester thread then any exposed stitching will either stay whitish or at most be a pale pastel colour. Having the stitching remaining in a contrast colour can often be very effective but you do need to be sure the the stitching is very even and expertly done. I've recently a dyed a T-shirt dark navy and the paler blue topstitiching around the neckline and hems looks good but uneven hems would have become much more noticeable.

Just looked and it says Sri Lankan Airways luggage allowance 20klos !!http://www.islandescapeholidays.co.uk/Sri-Lankan-Airlines
I always book Jet so luckily i am ok up to 30klos .
Emirates has a 30K limit but the internal Mumbai > Goa flight has 20 kilos. Although I've heard they are pretty relaxed on weight and do not charge as much as they do at Dabolim > UK charter. They seem to really fleece you on UK charter flights if you are over. Another reason to travel by schedule.
Sri lankan Airways is def 30 KGS if you book with a agent, but for Chilly only 20KGs as she booked through the internet.
I have been to Goa about 6 times now and I love the casual way of life, dressing is up to you anything goes. I took dresses and high heels the first time I went but the roads were so bad I never wore them unless I stayed in the hotel. Now i am so casual i take stuff like combats, linen trousers and nice tops to dress them up. I have known us stay on the beach from 9am till midnight so anything you feel comfortable in is ok.
