We are off to Lagos on the 13th November, can anybody recommend some good eating place?
Our teenage children are coming with us for the first time for a couple years so should make for an interesting holiday.........
i wonder whereabouts you are staying in lagos??. there are many great places to get a meal for all of you.....but why not do what we done...........s/c in sept:.......... cooked our own....sometimes.............either way , i am sure you will find many good places to eat at......too numerous to mention. have a good flight out.........enjoy your holiday......and a safe journey home...gl
I won't be doing a lot of cooking, as that's the whole idea of the holiday to have a rest from day to day chores.
as regards eating places there are 100,s of top class places in lagos
Close to the fire station is an excellent indian whilst up the road to the black ball rounabout - turn left and on the tulip rounabout there is a good chines plus the pirates restaurant which is excellent - martin the owner is an excellent host . down in the town there are numerous restaurants too many to mention - try the local restaurant on the main promenade (has a big coke sign on top - that is where all the locals go for a cheap but excellent meal
Cant remember the name but they specialise in fish. It doesnt look anything special from outside but go early to avoid the queues !!
Worth a trip to Praia da Luz about 15 minutes along the coast. Quite a few nice restaurants there but slightly more expensive than Lagos.
Try the local portugese restaurant near the pizza takeaway. Great service and reasonably priced.
Enjoy
I just hope it's not too cold.
Can anyone help or recommend any other places in praia de luz, preferably that do takeaways as we are taking 5 kids with us.
Thanks
The restuarant in Lagos that was previously refered to is the Adega da Marina, on the seafront near the footbridge over to the marina. Huge place, usual very good simple portuguese fare - fresh fish, grilled chicken, pork etc with chips or boiled potatoes and salad, inexpensive, good for families, but yes go early or queue.
Someone has already mentioned the Adega da Marinha which is very good and extremely reasonable, I have tried nearly all the Indian restaurants in the last couple of years and the best at the moment is the Samrat. It is tricky to explain where it is but if you stand facing Bon Vivant it is up to your right, ask, it,ll be worth it. We also love the Italia just to the back of the "spaceman " square on the right. In the Adega and the Italia you may have to queue, and they are the only two restaurants in Lagos where you might have to queue which says everything. Beware there are many restaurants whose food is perfectly good but are aimed at the Brit and are boring! We stayed at Porta da Villha about 9 years ago and we had a room that backed on to the street which was ok but there are quieter ones
I'm sorry, but I can't for the life of me see what people see in the Adega de Marina. The place has the ambience of a works' canteen, the food is not particularly good and, when it arrives it's thrown at you by the overworked waiters. The one decent part of the meal was the house red, but apart from that, I really couldn't find anything to recommend the place. From what I could see the majority of the diners were coach parties who turned up 50 at a time, and,if you're unlucky enough to turn up just after them you're in for a long, long wait.
I feel compelled to come to the defence of the Adega da Marina. Despite being loud and busy; I,ve often witnessed partys of locals celebrating a birthday I,ve even seen the local football team in there. It is not haute cuisine but if you want soup then grilled chicken or fish with a mixed salad, chips or boiled potatoes and wine and an ice cream for dessert and coffee to finish and still get change from 8 quid per head then look no further. Why consistently are there queues? Has everybody got it wrong? It is frequented predominantly by portuguese, and there is a saying when abroad eat where the locals eat. There are many up-market venues we also eat at which I would also happily recommend.
We always make at least 2 visits to the 'Coke Cafe' (thesign on the roof) when we are in Lagos.
It makes a change to have some simple, cheap but tasty food amongst the locals - you can get bored eating rich food in the other excellent reataurants in town.
The place must be good ,its always busy and as the old saying goes 'eat where the locals go and if its busy with them it must be good !'
We went to Lagos had a brilliant time ate in loads of good restaurants and we are now of the Gran Canaria at the end of October.
Thanks to everybody for their help
Hi, could anyone recommend any nice restaurants with views over the sea
Hi, Try Estrela do Mar - it's mainly a fish restaurant - and is on the top floor above the fish market on the Avenida dos Descobrimentos ( the main waterfront road.) For a more international menu try O Navegador - it has a roof terrace with spectacular views over the river, marina and Lagos bay as far as Alvor, Praia de Rocha and Portimao. If the sea view is an essential requirement, I would advise you to book, as there are only about six or seven tables on the roof terrace. If you need directions, just post again.
We didn't enjoy our meal at Adega da Marine, in fact two of the four meals were inedible. Avoid like the plague O'Charco restaurant, it was the dearest and worst meal of the holiday. Most of the food was out of packets.Digusting!!!
Rosie, I agree with your rating of the Adega, but, as you will see from previous posts in this thread, not everyone is of the same opinion. Just as well, I suppose, as, if everyone liked the same thing, each resort would have one restaurant only with a 3 day waiting list for a table !!
Love it or hate it the Adega de Marina is very good value and I agree you can't eat rich food all the time. If you have the Portugese special and there is two of you don't get 2 like we did there is masses of food. Puds are good to. The Dolphin restaurant is very good in Praia de Luz as is the Aquario but you have to book it.
The thing is it is only good value if you can actually eat the food otherwise it is just a waste of money. The food at the Adega wasn't too rich, just inedible e.g. a plain grilled chicken was nearly all bones.
theres a superb curry house near the town centre, wish i coudl remember the name, its on a corner and there cant be too many there, small place with tables outside...nicest curry i have had outside UK
