I thought it was time to venture back to the Greek islands, 10 years after my last visit.
The difference now is that I'm no longer in my early 20s looking for the high life, but I now have my lovely wife in tow, and want to avoid the massive crowds, but not be too isolated that we have to eat in the same taverna every night. I don't want to be bombarded by Union Jacks, bacon and eggs and scousers moaning about olive oil.
So, which island for scenery, quality accommodation, good beaches and a laid back atmposphere?
Is this too much too ask, or would I be better off in Devon?
Devon is lovely but there's too many tourists, and then there's the weather!!
I'm sorry i dont understand why you rule out kefalonia!! Kefalonia has some breathtaking views, scenery is out of this world. Still greek, not touristy and a island for relaxation. I certainly wouldnt rule it out!!!!
you hav'nt read the post, Kefalonia, Lesvos and Samos are just 3 of the islands I would recommend
We too love Greece but also like quieter resorts. Unless you are tied to school holidays visit May/June or September/October avoiding any school holidays and most places will be much less crowded and the weather still good. In recent years he have particularly enjoyed some of our holidays on the Peloponnese, Finikounda, Stoupa, Paralio Astros and Chrani. We also loved the Pelion and Parga and this year will visit Ithaca and Kefalonia (which we've been to before). In fact we've had at least 15 holidays on various islands and managed to find quieter resorts on all of them - even Kos. There are plenty of places that will be suitable, just check out the brochures more carefully and ask on here if you find anywhere you like the look of.
Are you restricted to packages??? Or are you prepared to go it alone??? If the latter, I'd recommend Patmos.
Yes Patmos would fit your requirements. Its available as a package through Sunvil. We stayed at the Romeos Hotel which is in a good location with sea views from the higher rooms
thanks everyone.... I'm drawn to Keffalonia for some reason... could be the Mandolin thing...
http://www.justkefalonia.co.uk has a brilliant messageboard
Skiathos is another choice. My personal favourite. Stunning beaches especially on the north side, very small island but Skiathos Town is a very cosmopliton town with a real buzz. Great tavernas, and bars but not at all rowdy or full of lager louts. http://www.skiathosinfo.com - Forum. and check out my photos and reviews under Christine on http://www.clearspray.co.uk.
Hope you enjoy wherever you choose.
Kefalonia is beautiful. Just avoid Lassi, too touristy (but thats my point of view). Agia Efimia or Assos are very pretty. Skala has become a bit crowded although I still love the place. Do your research carefully and ask lots of questions about your chosen resort before you book. There are lots of messageboards where people will help you. You need a car on the island though as it is quite large and theres lots to see. Skiathos is another choice. My personal favourite. I would definately check out Kefalonia. I stay in Poros on the south of the island although no tour operators go there anymore. It has a wonderful feel to it and i am going back for my 9th visit this year. Check this site out too, it has excellent resort reviews and lots of in depth information on the island and loads of photographs. Oh , it has a very active messageboard too!
