We stayed at Bahamas Hotel in Kos back in May, this was through Thomson but you can Book direct. Nice location, see Kos discussion at top of Forum, I have also done a Hotel Report.

As for Zante, we stayed in Alykanas a couple of years back at Grapevines through Sunstart, I believe you can Book Direct.

Re: package or DIY - the only way to tell is to take some time and price it up I'm afraid.
Greece isn't particularly well served by budget airlines (I know when we looked for Kefalonia, it was cheaper to book a SC package than it was to book flight and apartment seperately)
