Yes this is still the case in most places, although many new builds now have a cesspit and you can flush the paper down the toilet, but I wouldn't guarantee them that this is the case in your accommodation :yuck

It has always been the case everywhere I've stayed in Greece but I've never found it an issue. Most places empty the bins regularly and they don't smell. We usually line the bin with a plastic carrier bag from the supermarket for easy disposal - or someone suggested using scented nappy sacks - that way you can empty it as often as you choose - better than a blocked loo! I just have to remember where to put the paper when I get home

Fly bins [that's the posh name] can be found in many places around the med, where holiday resorts have shot up and the municipal drainage has not been upgraded some of the newer hotels and apartments now have holding tanks and massorators [which chop everything up] a bit like a big blender, then they pump out of a night, but older properties or those that dont have the room for the mechanics still ask that the bins be used not only for paper but also nappies and femail necessities as any of these can cause a block and you may be held responsible for the cost of clearing

Hi Steve, although we really like Greece the plumbing issue is serious enough to put us off going too much I must admit, however why don't you try somewhere a bit more different than predictable Spain or Portugal, try Malta you just can't beat it mate, the plumbing is first class aswell as I'm sure Graham will agree, you can shove as much bog roll down a Maltese toilet as your heart desires without any nasty repercussions, if your interested post in the Malta / Gozo forums and I will answer all your questions best I can.

Excellent idea there Sliema2

Malta & Greece are our absolute favourites, certainly no problem with the plumbing in Malta (Palm Court hotel excluded  )

One of the times when we were in Malta a miserable type chap was complaining about Malta as it "reminded him of Spain 20 years ago" not a bad thing I don't think, even if it is not quite true.

What I think he meant was Malta is not so commercialised as Spain and hasn't got that touristy feel where everybody is after your money.
We find the Maltese to be very friendly & trusting and very sociable towards us.

Malta is a fantastic destination with an incredible history and culture and also excellent cafes, bars, clubs entertainment etc.
Gozo is also very highly recommended, much quieter than Malta but still just as interesting with a wealth of culture & history (should keep Mark happy  )

To keep on topic what you could do steveraine is find some accommodation that you like in Greece and then just ask the flush question :yuck on here about your chosen accommodation as more Greek areas are being upgraded.

The accommodation we go to in Parga (mainlan Greece) is very modern so there is no toilet paper issue, but to be honest you get used to it after a day or so.

Why not try Cyprus, you'll get the greek atmosphere without having the paper bins? We've always been able to flush paper wherever we've stayed.

How long do you plan on visiting the toilet i find it hard to belive this could dictate were on holiday you go.

I have gone to greece for many years and only once has it been left long enough to become unhygenic .

I prefer to think it has gone to the tip and been burnt rather than down the toilet into the sea

Hi rumncoke :wave

Hope I dont upset or annoy you here but I dont think Cyprus has the real Greek feel or atmosphere about it
Don't get me wrong I have enjoyed my visits to Cyprus and would highly recommend going there but I think it has lost the real Greekness, perhaps this is a result of it's war and occupation of the north by Turkey  :swear but I find other areas of Greece have a totally different feel about them.

This is just my humble opinion and wouldn't want to put people off going to Cyprus as they would then miss out on a lovely country and people.
