I don't know if your waterside studio is one of the Simply Turkey ones, if so have no fears, they were easily one of the best package tour operators I have travelled with. And their rep in Gumusluk, Karen, was an absolute star. And if you are going with them, no need to take too many paperbacks...there were loads there !
Sue
Sue - yes we are with Simply, and you're right they are very good. This will be our third trip with them. Thanks for the tip re books - I shan't bother packing any - more room for shoes!
Janita, talking of shoes....jellies might come in handy. There's a nice bit of sandy-underfoot beach a short stroll away from the studios, but if you want to go in immediately in front of the studios it's rocky. Similarly, on the other side where the best snorkelling is, it's also rocky and there are a few sea urchins. Sue
Sue, thanks, your advice is really appreciated. Suitable snorkelling attire is always top of our packing list! Not long to go now - hope you enjoy Yalikavak.
After reading all the posts re currency exchange - is there a bank nearby, or do we have to travel into Bodrum?
No there wasn't a bank or post office in Gumusluk, the nearest ones are in Bodrum or Turgutreis by dolmus.
Also there are banks in Yalikavak which isn't far in a taxi - the dolmus doesn't go directly from Gumusluk to Yalikavak, but it's a nice place to spend a few hours especially on market day, we found their market a lot nicer than Bodrum market which was very big and very crowded. I believe some of the restaurants & shop keepers in Gumusluk might change money although we didn't change any this way ourselves.
Sue
Turgutries, a small, but much bigger resort than Gumusluk, is only a 15min and 50p dolmus trip away. You will find everything there, banks travel agents, post office, supermarkets, huge market on Wednesdays etc. Well worth a visit.
Thanks again Sue & Big Phil (my suitcase will be weighed down with all this info I'm collecting!!).
Just returned from a fantastic week and thought I'd let you know that there is now an ATM in car park by the dolumus station. Didn't need to use it myself, but saw plenty of others doing so.
mel.
Mel, you will see from the above when posted, we had a great time. We still haven't "come down" yet. The Studios and surrounding area were all we could have wished for and more. We enjoyed our first visit to Turkey very much and found the people as friendly and welcoming as Greece, but must confess we prefer Greek food - but still enjoyed the delights of Gumsuluk cuisine and would definately like to visit again some time.
Generally, just like to say that all the info and advice I had from this forum really helped us and was spot on for accuracy!
Janita
I must say i'm surprised you prefer the food in greece as your report on food in Turkey sounds mouth watering and we struggle a bit finding good food in Greece.(sorry I sound like i've got the food obsession thing now!)
cheers,Mel.
If you enjoy peace and quiet, this is the place - heaven on earth! The Studios were idylic and we found it really hard to drag ourselves from our terrace. There were plenty of restaurants, serving not just fish, but chicken, lamb, salads, etc. We spent many an evening enjoying drinks by the log fire in Bati restaurant. Also had excellent meals in Gumscafe and a terrific lunch in Cecil (I may of spelt this wrong!). If you enjoy watersports, would recommend going to Tamarisk Beach hotel for the day, where my husband brushed up on his waterskiing technique - they also have a very good lunch menu. As we only had a week, we spent most of our time lazing on our terrace sunbeds watching the boats come and go, walking around the bays and snorkelling - the water was just starting to warm up nicely. Therefore I do not have first hand knowledge of Bodrum, gulet cruises, turkish baths, etc but our Studio neighbours seemed to enjoy such things.
can ahyone help we have heard that the restrants in gumusluk are expensive and only sevre fish. my 2 sons will only eat fish done in batter as out of achippy. is there cheaper to eat and other stuffon menu. we were in gumusluk at easter and we ate out there and thought it was expensive
We had the nicest, most memorable meal we have ever had in our lives at Gumusluk. We went to the place which is the furthest one along the beach. The meal was lovely but the setting was INCREDIBLE. The table was right along the beach, we fed our bread rolls to the hundreds of little fish, the music was perfect, the toilets (I know this sounds daft) were the nicest/cleanest toilets I have ever seen in a restaurant. the waiters were very good. It was quite dark but they had lanterns everywhere.
It was a bit expensive compared to Turkish prices but really good value by British standards.
Oh, we all ate fish, can't remember if there were other alternatives
Gumusluk is ever more magical during the day for exploring and snorkling.
My favorite place in the world!
The last time I had a meal at Gumusluk was in April. There was 3 of us and it was only a lunch so we didn't really eat or drink too much. But we still had three types of mezes as starters and shared one big fish between the three of us. We also had 2 beers each. That cost us under £25. Under £25 for a meal with starters, drinks and fresh fish for 3 people is not a lot of money anywhere you go but when it is set in that beautiful location it is well worth it. They would also have meat or chicken for the kids, but fresh seafood is their speciality.
See my June 8th posting re restaurants, we had no trouble finding alternatives to fish. Apart from chicken, lamb etc, we also had turkish pizzas which were very tasty. Generally, we ate more meat than fish, and therefore didn't find the restaurants at all expensive.
Couldn't agree more re the setting - heaven!
Janita
I'm going to Gumusluk for 2 weeks on 5th September. Do you think that things will be getting quieter then? I am a little concerned after reading someones post who went in October to find that menus were very limited. I don't really 'do' fish. Do you think that there could be a problem?
