Flight Only / Airline and Airports

Discussions relating to flight only, airlines and airports.

Thanks Darren, the guidance on Emirates website is confusing. Yes, it does mention that some Uk airports may have restrictions on more than one peice of hand luggage but it implies that if this has been relaxed i.e. Manchester then extra would be allowed. But then elsewhere in the guidance it mentions only piece of hand luggage is allowed !! It also states the allowance is 5kg not 7kg - Darren, where did 7kg come from ? Thanks

beegee,

Everything is on the Emirates website but you have to read it carefully. As far as I'm aware, it's one piece from Manchester and up to 7kg. It might be worth giving them a call to be sure.

Sorry if this has been answered recently but can't seem to find the info. Son is flying from Cardiff to CDG Paris on Tuesday. Can he take his laptop as hand luggage and if so is this the only hand luggage he can take. I think it's fairly heavy as it's a few years old now but haven't weighed it. Do you think all laptops would be under weight allowance for hand luggage? thanks

He would need to check the websites of both the airport and airline. Some allow one piece of hand baggage and one personal item such as a handbag or laptop.

I've found Stansted quite good recently but now I've got what is probably a very silly question. I'm flying Ryanair to Billund next month for a few days and only taking hand luggage. I'm in the process of knitting a shawl for a grandchild due in July and wonder if it would be possible to take it with me. I really don't see how a lady of mature years could be suspected of risking weeks of hard work by using the needles to stab a member of the airline crew or fellow passenger but I have a strong feeling that it won't be allowed.
Incidentally Stansted have big tubs of plastic bags throughout the airport so I always stock up on them

I remember knitting on an internal flight in Russia many years ago, but I certainly wouldn't risk taking knitting needles in hand luggage now. If you were going to risk it make sure you take a stitch holder to put the knitting on incase they did confiscate the needle, but even that may not be allowed with having a sharp point.

You could try calling security at Stansted and asking, but you are still in the lap of the Gods if the person checking you through decides they are not allowed.

Hi Aslemma

I don't think you'll be able to take knitting needles with you.

Have a good trip to Billund. Is there much to see or do there?

My friends granny (94) was coming back off holiday in Spain with her knitting, they tried to confiscate it at check-in, but did allow her to open her luggage and put it in. She was well annoyed......... She said, did she look the kind of person to try to stab someone with a knitting needle? Made no difference - you can't take knitting needles on a plane.

I had a feeling that it wouldn't be allowed in this day and age. I remember years ago when my daughter was expecting her first baby I knitted all the way back from Hong Kong. With 283 stitches on the needle this time I daren't risk it, especially as I don't have any hold luggage to put it in. I'm going to visit an English friend who lives in Denmark which is why I don't need much luggage.

Hello, now there may be a link to this but I have not seen it so, I would like to know.
Me and the wife are of to Madrid in a few weeks and are taking small cases as hand lugage, does anybody know if the wife can go on the plane with her handbag as well as her small case. We have heard that some airports only let you take one bag on board.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave .. each airline and airport operates its own hand luggage policy. Some allow one piece, others allow two. You would be best checking the websites of the airline and both airports involved.

I suspect that there has been at least one misunderstanding of wording and possibly the rules here.

First of all, there are two sets of rules.
1- Your airline's limits on weight and number of items of any description.
2- The safety and security regulations on dangerous items, which these days includes all liquids etc.

Cabin or Hand baggage is what you carry through security and onto the plane. Some airport and many airlines limit you to one item of hand baggage - if you don't know for sure assume that this applies to you.

Hold or checked baggage is what you hand in at checkin and collect at the other end (unless you're with BA from T5, in which case it goes to Milan!!)

If they are really strict at checkin your clear plastic bag will have to fit in whatever else you are carrying (to meet the airline weight/volume rule) but you'll need to get it out at security.

The newish rules on liquids in hand baggage are here. Note that there is a size limit on the clear bag and also on the individual items in it. But this only applies to hand baggage, if you want to put full sized bottles of shampoo or similar in you hold baggage that is OK, there are no security limits (but wrap them in a towel in case they burst). Anything bought at shops after security is also OK.

Don't forget, the old security rules still apply. So anything electrical (such as your hair dryer) should be in hand baggage and anything sharp (such as nail files and scissors) should be in the hold. Sharp items in hand baggage spotted on security X-Ray will probably be confiscated.

Actually it is recommended that electrcal items go in the hold luggage not the hand baggage. I always put electrical in the hold.

Now you mention it....

they always used to ask at checkin whether there were any electrical items in the checked bag and then scowl if you said yes but the current DfT advice (link above) isn't specific anymore and just says large electrical items in cabin baggage have to be removed and screened seperately. I shall look into this, it may come in handy because I was thinking of buying a light but bulky electrical in Germany next month.

I remember there was a time (not that long ago) when electricals had to be in hand baggage when leaving Britain but had to be in hold baggage when leaving Rimini and some other Italian airports. That confused quite a few people and Ryanair got quite upset.

I've just done a quick check of easyjet and Ryanair sites. Easyjet specifically say that "electronic devices" cannot be carried in checked bags - the question is does the person who wrote that know the difference between electronic and electrical? Ryanair's info is useless, it doesn't help on electricals but does suggest that sharp objects in hand baggage be wrapped up to prevent injury to the security people - yeah, and those emptying the bin at security later on!

I am going to Germany with Tuifly in 2 weeks and want to take only hand luggage.I have looked on their website and it states only 1 piece of hand luggage, but that was from 2006.The airports(Newcastle)website states from January this year the 1 piece of hand luggage was lifted and a handbag would now be allowed.I am confused! Will Braun gas tongs be allowed in my hand luggage?

I'm going to Australia in 9 weeks :)

Got my Ipod touch and my psp at the ready. I have recently bought a portable charger (which has batteries in it and plugs into the ipod and psp as well as mobile phones.)

Am I allowed to take this on the flight? I was also thinking of buying a spare battery for my psp.

Also, due to work commitments (for myself and my brother: I am an ICT teacher and my brother is a technition) we have to take our laptops. Do we need to detatch the batteries from the laptops before going through security?

I've done a general search for this already but am still slightly confused! The equipment is quite expensive and I'm worried about having it confiscated!

dramaqueen,

You can take you IPOD / PSP and charger no problem. Same with your laptops. Security may want to inspect them though, no need to remove the battery.
