so what are we looking at for a pint of local lager? 2-3 euros?
Reply
150 to 2 euro cheap lager that my hubby said tasted like dish water or 350 euro for a named beer. if we could drink beer it would of been a cheap hol but i like my vodka and hubby likes his magners.some places the cheap beers was 3 euro just depended where you went.it wasnt only the drink it was everything in general groceries from the spar to your meals out.we are not moaning we really enjoyed our hol just a bit shocked at the prices we usually go half board or all inclusive so may consider that again

well madge that sounds expensive for drinks you probably were paying e5 for the magners, any idea what the name of the bar is.there are lots of bars with beer from 1.50 2.00 and great deals on shorts :tongue and thats san miguel and dorada ;) as for eating out we were paying e5 ish for steak baguette and chips etc when the euro was 1.47 so it seemed a bargin then and its still that price however with the euro collapsing it looks alt dearer i must agree :que

We were in PDC Nov 20 thru Dec 18. Versus 2007 we reckoned that local inflation in Euros was around 20% and factor in the drop in Sterling and most thing were 50% more expensive. Also the place was a lot quieter than previous years, in some cases whole apartment complexes full in previous years were empty this time around.

Hi we were there in Nov which is when we go every year we love Lanza however we doubt if we will go back everything was expensive meals drinks etc, for eg 2 brandy and cokes were 10e and it as all the same everwhere in the resort which was pdc ,it did not matter which bar you went to. It was like a ghost town, normally you might have to que for a restraunt however some of them maybe had a couple of people in them never seen it like this. One night walking back say from about linekers to the old town where we were staying at about 10.30 we passed about 3 people could not believe it can only put it down to the roadworks for anyone going in the near future i really hope it does pick up.

Had a text from my Dad this morning. They're out in PDC for 2 weeks. He is so not impressed with the prices over there. He quoted me 3 examples= 2 G&T's - 8E, can of baked beans 1.20E and 3 potatoes :que -1.90 E. I'll post some more when they get back next Friday.

It has become very expensive over here I'm afraid, though having just spent two weeks in Ireland where food was extremely expensive in comparison, my shopping today was a nice surprise :) Sorry, if this is boring, but I just paid 1.02€ for 6 huge baking potatoes, 1.40€ for half kilo carrots, a total of 2.94€ for salad stuff, including spring onions, toms on the vine, various lettuces and a cucumber, 94c for half kilo of onions, and in the meat section 2.20€ for a kilo of chicken bits, 3.83€ for 400gms steak, and 82c for two huge pigs kidneys!!!! All of this was bought in what I would class as a "tourists" supermarket. Local bread and eggs are subsidised here, so will be the same price in any supermarket, but I am afraid you will pay through the nose for things like Heinz Beans etc.

There are a lot of restaurants along the strip in PDC selling 3 course menus for under 8€, and you can always ask in any restaurant for the Menu del Dia, and the price of it, which again I think is regulated. I know Pinnochios (sp?) does a very good breakfast deal!!!

You do have to remember that with gin etc, the measures are three times those of the UK, so I suppose that makes them a bit more reasonable in price.

We got back from Matagorda yesterday and thought it seemed really expensive compared to our previous Canary holidays - however I think some of it is down to the weak pound, we kept saying that if we'd got 1.5euros to the pound like last time we probably wouldn't have thought too much about it.

We walked into PDC and had one of the 3 courses for 9euro meals - you get what you pay for I guess :( We ended up eating in Matagorda most nights and compremised by only having a main course each and a desert between us - including a drink each it usually came to somewhere between 20-30 euros for the 2 of us (most Starters costing between 6-10 euros!!!) The main courses were pretty large however so we never felt un-full :) We also took advantage of the free bottle of house wine a lot of restaurants were offering - it saved us buying any drinks with the meal so we could get more food for our money....blimey I sound like a right old cheapskate :D

No, you don't sound like a cheapskate at all Janette :) It's hard enough for us residents, and the wages here are very low unfortunately, but we are all on the lookout for the bargains to be had, and free wine with a meal sounds good to me :cheers :cheers
Thing is when you go on holiday you don't want to have to be cooking all the time, you do want to enjoy meals and drinks out, and Lanzarote is no longer the cheap place to do it in, especially with the exchange rate as it is :(
Reply
so can you get things like pie and chips or chops and chips for about 6 euros? Or is it a lot dearer?
Reply
Chops, chips and salad seem to be on an awful lot of the cheap daily menus. The canarian people tend not to eat pies much.

We have just booked PDC for a week in March. Although we are a little concerned with the euro/pound exchange rate, a holiday is what you make it, and although we would like to be able to afford to take more money, we are prepared to economise more.

If you are the type of person whose sole purpose on holiday is to drink beer or spirits from when you get up in a morning, then to get plastered in the evening, then being loud and obnoxious, vomiting in the gutter; then you will certainly feel the pinch. But to be quite honest, I don't have any sympathy, and the less I see of it, the better.

Luckily, me and the other half are both wine drinkers, and this is much better value for money (and much nicer). Last year, around the same time, bottles of red wine were upwards of €2.50 in the supermarket, and from about €7.50 in the restaurants/bars. We tend to like something a bit better than basic, so would pay €4-€7 in the supermarket, or more if we were treating ourselves. We generally paid €12-€15 in the restaurants. Although we are prepared to pay a little more this year. Even if the exchange rate is €1/£1, it represents better value than the UK for the equivalent quality.

Plus, although it's not great cooking in your apartment, we are prepared that we will have to do that more often than we would like. We buy some cold spanish meats/cheeses, a bit of salad and fresh bread. It's delicious, and the meats last a few meals, the salad, especially the tomatoes are 1000X better than anything in the UK, and all you have to buy is fresh bread daily. We found we had the nicest and cheapest lunches in our apartments. Some nights we ate in, and you can make some lovely meals if you know how to cook. Spain has lovely chicken.
Last year, we took a few basics with us, such as a small pepper and salt grinder. This year, we plan to take a few more things, like basic herbs and spices. Even if we don't, they are cheap enough in the supermarket. A one off large shop at the beginning can last all week/fortnight, just restocking with perishables. You can save a fortune, you just have to plan.

A few meals cooked in the apartment, plus a few menu del dias, means that on a weeks holiday, we can then have one night where we can go to one of the really nice restaurants, order whatever we want and whatever wine we want.

People might scoff at us for being boring, but it's a extra week away from home, no worries, no work.

The thing is, some people drink around the pool, have a nap in the afternoon then drink more until bedtime. Others get loud but not all!!! I'm not saying I do that but I know people that do and thats their holiday to them!!! It'd probably be quite easy for someone to have 8-10 beers a day whilst on holiday! A couple round the pool, one or two with lunch, couple more round the pool after lunch, a few with your evening meal and a couple on your night out! Obviously it's the loud idiots who let their kids do what they like that spoils it for the rest of us. Especially the ones coming in at 2 am shouting about the place letting their kids race up and down the corridors.
However these types of people just give real drinkers a bad name! ;)

:offtop Chivas - I agree with you. We are some of those people. We're 2 couples late 40's early 50's, and enjoy having a leisurely lunch round the pool or in a little bar, accompanied by 1 or 2 lagers or a bottle of wine. We also eat out of an evening and have a few drinks. That certainly doesn't mean that we end up
being loud and obnoxious, vomiting in the gutter;
. Personally I don't like to see this behaviour either, & try and avoid places where its likely to happen. I do think it's a bit of a cheek though to tar all people who enjoy a drink with the same brush. :que Back to the original subject. It is very expensive there. My mum & dad just got back today, and have never been anywhere so expensive. They cook in the apartment & found the supermarkets dear. My mum likes a gin & tonic, and many places were charging 8 euros. :yikes

Oh, don't get me wrong, each to their own. If you look at what I said:
If you are the type of person whose sole purpose on holiday is to drink beer or spirits from when you get up in a morning, then to get plastered in the evening, then being loud and obnoxious, vomiting in the gutter; then you will certainly feel the pinch. But to be quite honest, I don't have any sympathy, and the less I see of it, the better.

Helen, if you cared to read it properly, you would realise that I am talking about people who drink all day and get obnoxious etc...........if you would care to point out where I actually said what you are accusing me of?
The only thing I can think I said was maybe wrong, was using the word "then" before "loud and obnoxious" instead of "and".
I am certainly not saying that those who DO get drunk DO get loud and obnoxious? We like a drink, we might get drunk.
I am NOT "tarring people with the same brush", so I do not think I am being "cheeky", so don't accuse me of that or assume what I am thinking. There IS a minority of people whose sole aim IS to drink a LOT all day, then in the evening AND get obnoxious. These people will definatley feel the pinch.

I have NO problem with people who want a few beers at lunch and maybe get drunk in the evening. It's the loud people with uncontrolled children, as Chivas pointed out, that I have no sympathy for.

What I am saying is that you can economoise.

I suggest if you have a problem with what I have written, you can PM me and ask for clarification.

I agree, I don't think the intention was to tar drinkers with the same brush.
My point was that people can drink just as much as the loud and obnoxious and they will feel the euro bite just the same so it makes no difference if you're loud and obnoxious or quiet as a mouse!!!
