Hi there - we took our (then) 10 year old to Velidhu Island in February 2007. She had a fabulous time but we did worry she would be a little bored if she didn't take to the heat or snorkelling, but no problems there as there was a couple of other kids for her to hang around with. And she was of the age where we could leave her in the villa for short periods too.
Just be aware that the kids might get a little frightened if they see a bigger fish than what they expect (i.e. the Titan Triggerfish or a parrotfish). Our daughter went to the housereef and she wasn't overly keen by the size of some of the fish. After that she stayed in the shallows and let damselfish and one spot banners swim around her feet and body.
The staff loved her dearly and nothing was too much trouble for them if she had any requests (e.g. pancakes were not on for breakfast everyday, but they made her some specially the following morning, and they asked her if she wanted fries or chips if she didn't like the Asian or Indian nights, but mostly she coped well with the food, especially the fresh pasta).
We didn't have trouble with the flight over as it was late(ish) leaving with the UK (Sri Lankan Airways) and she slept well - coming back though it was two flights and longer but she coped ok - a little tired for a couple of days.
We are going back April 2009, this time to Vilu Reef and she will be 12. She can't wait
