You might consider Port El Kantaoui in Tunisia which could tick many of your boxes. There are some very nice hotels, a marina with boats from all over the world, fronted by lots of cafes and restaurants where you can people-watch over a meal or drink, There is another square with a musical fountain lit up at night, also surrounded by cafes etc. which is very nice. Beaches in Tunisia are lovely and the weather in September should be ideal (it better be because I'm going out on 27th ) Most of the hotels have entertainment and if you don't fancy what is on at your's you can go into any of the others. Taxis and transport is cheap so if you want to explore further it isn't a problem. You will need to go to Sousse (just down the road) for the full shopping experience, as not only do they have a proper Medina but also a big fixed price shop covering four floors, selling everything from nicknacks to carpets). I think a week is ideal for a first visit, as with a flight time of about 3 hours you can always go back again another time if you get the bug (or again and again in my case). I freely admit that Sousse is my preferred area but I really think PEK might suit you better for a first visit. There are many people on here who will be pleased to give you advice if you ask. Wherever you decide to go do have a good time and tell us all about it when you get back. :sun2
