After taking far too many holidays in Spain, we are now looking for somewhere different to go, and thought Greece might be a good bet. Have done some reading, but now feel more confused than ever!
So.....I'd be grateful for any suggestions about where to stay, what to see, etc. Would rather stay somewhere centrral to bars, restaurants, etc (although not interested in clubbing) and would like to be close to a nice beach, as we like to go snorkelling a fair bit.
The only thing that concerns me at the moment about a trip to somewhere in Greece is the time of year we can go. As I am a teacher, I am limited to going away during school holidays. We wanted to go in Occtober (half term is last week in October) but I have read that many places in Greece are like Turkey, in that pretty much everything shuts down by mid-October. Is that the case everywhere, or just in the less "touristy" bits?
Any feedback gratefully received!!
I hope you can fit in a holiday to Greece because it's a wonderful place. There are so many Islands to choose from and it's all down to personal choice. I would suggest you pick an island that appeals to you and then ask around for resort recommendations. I'm sure people on this forum will be able to offer you lots of advice. Good luck with your hunt.

Hi! I agree with Shirley H Greece does tend to slow down once we enter October . However if you can possibly go in the summer it will be well worth it. Whichever country and resort you choose I doubt if you'll be making many more trips to Spain. The Greek people and the culture are wonderful. I am a school caretaker ,so know how frustrating it is to try and find a decent holiday at a reasonable price in the school holidays.
Had a quick look on Portland and they are still doing Crete in October. I have know it rain for the whole month tho!!

Crete is the most southerly Island so is also very hot in July & Aug.
IMHO I would still rather go in the six weeks of the summer hols as you are definately taking a chance with the weather at the end of October in Greece. It's a beautiful country, I'm sure you wont regret visiting whenever you go.
Can't really go in the summer hols, as my other half is very fair-skinned and can't handle a lot of heat! Also, as we live on the south coast, very near the beach, if I suggest going away in July/August, I tend to get a "what's the point?" response
Have a great time next time you all go - hopefully we will get there sometime in the not-too-distant future as well!
I think June is the best month to go, and when I don't have to consider school holidays anymore that will be the month for me.
I know the feeling . I work at a school (technician) & can only get the school holidays when it is more expensive. However for the last 2 years we have been to Kefalos on Kos in july. It is a great place to go, very relaxing and ideal for couples. The best thing for us was the onshore breeze which kept it cool. Wherever you choose have a great time and enjoy
