I've just bailed out of my booking this morning - not prepared to run the risk and end up at "Horror Village". Every review I've read for this year is detrimental.

It cost me £50 in admin charges and an additional £107 for my HB accommodation at Elounda Bay but this comes with very good current reviews and very similar outlook to Spinalonga.

I'm not prepared to run the risk of a much needed break in unsatisfactory and uncomfortable surroundings.

Happier now but out of pocket 8)

i arrived on holiday at The Hera Village Hotel in April 2006 and found the hotel absolutely breath taking , the view is out of this world and the staff are extremely friendly and make you feel at home . I have read the reviews that are on the internet and i think that they are absolute bollocks the people do not know what they are talking about . The food is superb and they do a wonderful selection , the srevice is also excellent. The owners George and Manolis are very welcoming and tend to your every need. In fact all of the staff do . They have great entertainment also they cator for every age eg : BIngo for the oldies to musical chairs for the kids, they also do fantastic entertainment around the pool , while i was there every body thourelly enjoyed themselves and all said that they would return . So if you do visit the island of crete i strongly recomend The Hera Village Hotel .

Hi Lisa

Thanks for that maybe it has been early season teething problems but I'm still not prepared to take the risk. I had a look at some of the photos posted in trip advisor and the beach area and the size of the studio shown really put me off.

People can lie in the content of their comments but the camera doesn't lie and since it was a studio we booked and I like a good stroll on a nice beach I will be more content at the Elounda Bay Hotel.

Good luck and I hope you have a very good holiday - I'm sure you will. :)

The week I stayed at Hera Village was the first week of the season. The previous three posts were all guests at the same time. It is true, the hotel did have a few teething problems, but a more accommodating and friendly group of hotel staff and owners you would be hard pushed to find. In fact the only time I ever saw anyone of them upset was when they were informed by a group of people on the last night - when nothing could be done to rectify the problem - that the drinks were not up to scratch. Having received nothing but care for our comfort during our stay, I could understand why the owners felt frustrated about not being given the chance to put any perceived shortcomings right. I would say that, given the behaviour of those guests in particular, it might well have been a little stronger than perhaps they thought. It certainly seemed to have altered their state; they were not that bad mannered most of the time.

I was surprised to see adverse comments about "the beach" in these reviews! Whilst I did not by my holiday from a brochure, I did check up on its location on this site before booking and I was under no illusions (being half way up a cliff 'n all) that there was going be what one might call a golden strip. There is a shoreline, certainly, but it's a bit of a steep walk to it and you may as well leave your bucket and spade at the top of the hill. Beaches are 4 clicks either side of the hotel, buses run every 20 mins on weekdays, slightly further apart at weekends and cost bugger all to get to either Agi Nik or Ellounda. In fact the most you will pay in a taxi called by the hotel is 7 Euro, per cab.

If you are looking for "chips with everything" meals, this probably isn't your bag. I actually heard people cheering about the fish fingers so I was quite surprised to see complaints about them on here. They bring local and authentic foods to the buffet, fresh fish and veggies and the like, and Ray would go a hundred miles out of his way to look after you in the restaurant.

They are lovely and hard working people and the hotel is beautiful, if you are not happy with any aspect of your stay please tell them, nicely, and they WILL do their utmost to try and make you happy. They can't put right what they don't know is wrong.

All in all I would recommend this place to any one who does not have trouble with steps (there are a lot of them It's on a cliff you know!). If you treat the people that run this hotel with respect they will return it 100 fold.
