flying from where?

south of France and Italy would probably mean DIY and be very busy (ie expensive) in August as it's when those countries shut down and go away themselves.

Portugal (Algarve and specifically the eastern end) might be suitable depending on whether the country doesn't go into meltdown over the next few months following the financial crisis. Further north would be harder depending on where you come from but has the "benefit" of fewer loud British groups.

Not much experience of Spain myself - or the Greek and Turkish options that might be suitable but with those you're getting into longer flight times, do you fancy that with a 2 year old bearing in mind the travel to the airport and checkin waiting time?

Hey, thank you for replying. She lives in Derby and I'm in Birmingham, so East Midlands or Birmingham are the best bets for airports. I will speak to her about the little one and see what she thinks, but he should be ok with a couple of hours travel. I would imagine the Algarve is 3 or so in the air?

the closest Greek islands are Kirkira [corf] Cefalonia [Kefalonia] and Zakynthos[zante] depending where in the UK you fly form are 21/2 to 3 hrs in terms of price [holiday wise Zakynthos will most likely be the cheapest and Cefalonia the dearest, if you want to avoid the Brits abroad syndrome then look at Argassi [dosn't have a very nice beach] Kalamaki,Tsilivi, or Planos all on Zakynthos and all within a 15 euro taxi transfer from the airport

I will second Zakynthos as the flight is doable with a little one. We're off to Kalamki ourselves in August. If you look at booking ASAP you might be lucky in securing a free child place but sorry I can't help much more with that as my kids are grown up now. My nephew is taking his family AI to the Caretta Beach hotel, Kalamaki as there is loads to do for the children. With your budget of £1000 each, you should be able to manage it.

East Midlands - Algarve (Faro) would be about 2hr45" flying. And Derby is close by so no long drag getting there. Flight time from Brum is the same but maybe not as convenient. I've just done a random check on Thomas Cook and they offered in Alvor flying 09:10 on Sunday 7 August (back home 16:00), a 3* All Inclusive for 7 nights for £1624 for the 3 of you (room includes small kitchen for baby stuff) or 4* half board for £1686. They've got B&B and S/C options as well for £200-300 less and more choice in Albufeira (you'd have to ask experts about exact locations regarding noisy groups there). At this point their website went a bit iffy so I couldn't try any other options but it looks like you could find something reasonable within budget.

Best decide on country and ask the question again in the specific forum to get the experts. Most Spanish resorts would be less flying time, Greece about the same and Turkey longer.

Welcome to HT.....Menorca is quiet and family friendly with a short flight.
Thomas Cook have some free child places going 5th Aug from Birmingham and East Midlands. I had a look and you could go for 14nights within your budget to some properties.

Hope this helps.....Caz

Thank you very much everyone! I will speak to the missus about the possible destinations, we had talked about Greece before so I will look into Zakynthos, Steves destinations and Menorca. I very much appreciate all your help! :tup

You do not state the nationality of your partner. If she is not British i.e. she holds a passport from a non EU country then there may be visa requirements to comply with. There have been several tales of woe here on HT when people have booked holidays in good faith and then fallen foul of the regulations.

There are some good deal around for Tunisia at the moment on Thomson and Thomas Cooks website.
The hotels are of a high standard especially the Riu ones and the beaches there are white sand.
Its only a 3 hour flight and a short transfer.

My girlfriend is mixed race (Jamaican/Irish) but as far as I know she has a British passport. As would her son. I will look at Tunisia too, thanks.

Was just going to suggest Tunisia. Lots of family oriented resorts and beautiful weather.

Hey guys, quick update. We looked into the locations you mentioned but the girlfriend and myself took a trip to co-op travel yesterday and booked a holiday to a Jamaican sounding hotel in Turkey that has good reviews.

It's called the 'Otel Raga' (if you search in google you can find it)

It's situated in Side, which looks to have some cool hiwstorical sites around.

We are thinking about Disneyland Florida next year too, but the GF is obsessed with visiting Ghana after she saw The Gambia! Good job I have a godmother out there then....

Thank you for all your help!!!
