Hi my other half wants to hire a scooter for a couple of days in Goa. Ive heard you can get an IDP from the RAC, and all you need to do is produce two passport photos and your UK driving license, plus 5pounds.
Am i right in thinking you need to produce your UK motorbike license, or can you just produce your UK full car driving license?
Also, if you get stopped by the police and you do produce your IDP along with the owner documents and say your borrowing it off a 'friend' , the friend being a taxi driver or someone similar, will the police still have grounds to fine you?
Cant help you with what you would need at the roadside in goa, maybe a couple of hundred rupees wouldnt go amiss

Many scooter owners now register their scoots as rentals - (recognised by yellow numbers on a black background)
I'd advise you to get one of the legal ones.
International driving licences can be obained by downloading the forms fom the website at Automobile Association. You can also get them at some post offices.
They cost £5.50 + £2 handling charge. You send off a copy of your UK licence, a copy of your passport and 2 passport photos. It takes about 10 days to process.
When riding in Goa - you should carry the vehicle documents, International permit, and for good measure your UK licence. I've only ever been stopped once in 10 years, but I have seen lots of regular checks being carried out.
I always go to the post office & do it there and then, only certain post offices do them, check the link, then click on branch locator, put Int driving licence in drop down box & your postcode for your nearest.
Where is the nearest PO I asked - Bristol and you have to go in person!!
We live in South Wales.
You can download forms from the RAC. and just have to pay an extra £2.
It states on the international driving permit that it is not valid unless it is presented with the original driving license but I know from experience that the average Goan copper does not know this.

I know from experience that the average Goa copper does not know what an International Permit is when he sees one.
So few of the europeans stopped for checks have them.

But I bet they know what a couple of 100Rp notes look like when they're tucked in your passport if you're stopped.
I had a scooter for two weeks last year with no international licence.Just for up and down to the beach and along the main Calangute to Candolim drag.Never got stopped and just assumed that an on the spot "fine" ha ha would be levied.Would I be correct in assuming this to be the case?
Lez
I was stopped twice in Margao over a 3 month period last year. After checking bike papers (yellow plate) and licence, was waved on my way with a disapointed look from the policeman.
Tut tut Lez. Fibbing to the plods!! haha. Good for you.
