I sympathise. My only holiday in the past 10 years, since I bought my first property, and began paying a mortgage was to Ireland last year. But then that was visiting my grandparents. So not sure I really call it a 'holiday'
This year I have already paid for my flights to Seychelles in October for a month. Luckily for me I got a bonus at work at Christmas. Add a couple of shifts of overtime and I found the £660 for the flights.
In previous years I would never have found spending money for a month in the Seychelles. However next month a bank loan finishes that I have had for the past 10 years. So that's £200 a month saved/put towards my spending money fund. That and a few shifts of overtime in the coming months should see me having a great holiday.
I should also add I am staying with friends out there, so no accommodation costs to find.
If you cant afford a holiday then decide how important one really is for you and try and put by £20 a week into a savings account and then when you have enough go on holiday. You don't have to shop at the most expensive places if you cant afford to. I mean you wouldn't shop at Harrods if you could find the exact same item in Tesco much cheaper!
Also a few years ago the euro exchange rate was at least 1.4 , and with it now being around 1.1 we have to pay out more pounds to if we are staying in accomodation within the euro zone.
I can see why people are struggling with higher priced holidays especially when our basic cost of living has also increased which leaves us with less disposable income.
I have never taken my children from school as I don't really think it is right but with prices this year I may have no choice. It would be 2 to 4 days max so I hope they will be fine with that.
Kazza I really hope you find something soon it must be really stressful for you I hope you get to go to Spain this year. Can I ask why you have to go Jul/Aug is it just because it's the hottest time? Would you not consider going somewhere cheaper just to get away?
