Hi Forum!
Ok, any advice on this one appreciated.
6 months ago booked a royal suite in a hotel in bali for our Honeymoon ( were getting married this saturday 1st oct ). Best room with all the bells and whistles - hey its our honeymoon we want the best!! Paid for in full.
Last Saturday afternoon Thomas Cook agent phoned to tell us there'd been a problem - the royal rooms were double booked, they're going to have to downgrade us to a standard suite. Ok, not very happy about this to say the least. They offered to refund the difference + small comp - so what, it's our honeymoon, we want what we booked and paid for!
Have contacted the hotel directly and they confirmed issue, have also asked them to confirm the date that their booking was confirmed with the operator. ( no response yet )
What has really got my goat about it is that they have left it til a week before leaving, so there's no way we could sort anything alternative out.
we're frankly tied in and shafted.
So, is there any point in fighting this in my time before the wedding, or should i sit back and accept it like a plum?
Cheers!

I can only suggest you contact Ros Fernihough, travel law solicitor - See Safe and on 01922 621114 for free advice. Doubt at this stage there is much you can do but I would not let that put you off. I do not think you should just sit back and do nothing. All the very best and hope everything goes OK
I would also give Ros a ring as she will tell you exactly where you stand on this. Im sure you would be able to cancel and get all your money back (she will tell you if you can or not) and book quickly with someone else. You might even get a cheap deal?!
Have a quick look around on line e.g. http://www.virginholidays.co.uk/worldwide/regions/bali.shtml
Hope you get a fab honeymoon, and good luck
It might be useful to know if the double booking has arisen because the hotel has booked the Royal Room with some other operator and what sequence the bookings were made. It will come down to which operator has the larger clout with the hotel or, if both bookings are with T.Cooks then it will be determined by which party is likely to demand (and be justified in demanding) the larger compensation/refund.
You need to move quickly on this with Ros and see if she can estimate the value of the refund. Then hit T.Cooks with that figure and see if they can pressure the hotel to bounce the other booking. Everything revolves around money these days - so use that to your advantage.
Are just you and future hubby travelling or have guests also boooked with T. Cooks - maybe the threat of all cancelling would focus T.C mind.
Let us know the outcome - and, oh, Congratulations on Saturday.

is it the Nusa Dua you are going to? I am surprised you can only be offered a standard room. We were in Bali in July/August( a paradise island!) and tourists were way down in number. We were upgraded in our hotel. If you can only be offered a standard room then I would suggest you ask them about another hotel. There are many luxurious hotels there. I would give Ros a call and also first check through the Safe and Sound booklet she produced for us. You can access it by clicking on my signature.
Louise ( other half ) went to branch. Asked questions, lots of questions... answers:
Thomson system glitch responsible - shoulndt have been allowed to book in the first place!
Thomson admitted fault to TC verbally.
Offered "perks" (consistent with "switch-selling" I've seen documented elsewhere).
Asked to write written complaint.
T.C not happy with Thomson ( apparently happens a lot ) - manager writing complaint too and ( she's actually been the saving grace of all this )
Other:
Found out from hotel - booked out in the good rooms from 9th - we turn up on the 4th, should we get a refund on the upgrade then convince them on covering costs to put us into the better rooms for the first 5 days of our stay? ( not ideal )
Thanks for all of your response and support, It's making things a lot easier to handle I spend a lot of time on extreme sports forums giving out advice and helping others, it's great to come somewhere as a newbie and feel that same spirit .
Louise will be calling Ros in the morning and following your advice. Safe and sound booklet was good too - thanks!!!
yep Nusa dua, strange as i've heard it's been quiet too.........
And finally:
Chin up.... we'll fight them on the beaches
yep, think that was pretty much it......
Is there no possibility you could change your date to go on the 9th??
Have just seen your report on thomas cook and your honeymoon.
we have been going to bali every year for the past 6 years as you can tell we just love the place. it has nothing to do with type of hotel you are in we stay in a small family run hotel we call it home. it is all to do with the people and there way of life. we now have a lot of freinds there that we call our bali familys we have seen them marry and have there babys so loads to do on the beach
we always stay in sanur as nusa is a man made resort not the real bali
went there once could not wait to get back to sanur.
i woul stay in a tent on the beach and still have a wonderful time.
if you are wanting to chage hotels the grand bali baech is just great also thr bali hyat
