Perhaps it's more than you might wish to spend, but Portsmouth has an Ibis, and I was happy with my stay there ...........
we stayed at the premium inn at southsea ,cheap and a short walk into portsmouth
I live in Portsmouth and there are loads of B&Bs and hotels here. Are you looking for something close to the ferry port? There is a Travel Lodge almost opposite the ferry port if you just want somewhere reasonably priced . I cant comment on the food but there is a restaurant/pub downstairs there with a kids room, last time we went was a few years ago when the kids were small as they had a ball park but Im not sure what its like now. Theres plenty of nice places to eat and visit so it might be worth just staying there and going out to eat. if you want any info at all just ask or PM me. i live 5 mins from the Ferry Port and know the area like the back of my hand. if you want something better than a Travelodge most of the hotels and B&Bs are in the Southsea area which is a 7-10 min drive. Just ask if you need any info.
