i think you will find they will nearly all refuse to accept responsibility.. HOWEVER if you don't use one and have a theft then your insurers wont pay out.... catch 22

As Wizard says, most will probably refuse to accept responsibility, but I do know that they
are obliged to contact the police should this happen.

We always get a safety deposit box, not just for insurance purposes, but for peace of mind.
It's much much safer than carrying things round with you, and in over 30years of travelling
"touch wood", we;ve never had any problems whatsoever.

(In fact one private apartment we were staying in a few years back didnt have one, and at
the time they were on offer here in the UK - really good deal - so we offered to bring one
over as hand luggage. The owners saw from that how important we felt it was and so fitted
one themselves. :tup )

I only ask because after years of renting private apartments/villas , which usually have one ,we are staying in a hotel on the next trip and I was unsure of the safety of these .

The hotels that I've stayed in, in Spain, do accept responsibility for their safes and the amount will be written on the back of the receipt that you get when you hire a safe, which you hand back over with the key and receive a small amount of euros back as the " deposit".

It's not a lot and therefore it is not advisable to keep large amounts of hard cash and huge amounts of valuables inside the safe, although things like jewellery are covered by my house insurance policy and travellers cheques will be replaced within 24 hours, just as long as you don't keep the numbers of the cheques inside the safe as well.

A few years back, I was having a vertical blind fitted on the back bedroom window by a well-known company with a girl's name, and the delivery date was longer than normal because he was going on holiday.
He went to the CDS on an AOA holiday and ended up in the Hotel Pez Espada in Torremolinos.

When he came back to fit the blind I asked him about his holiday and whether he liked the hotel.
They had been allocated a room in the annexe overlooking the gardens and to cut a long story short, while they were out in the resort one day, someone got into their room, ripped the safe off the wooden shelf in the wardrobe and threw it over the balcony to one of their accomplices.

The hotel insured the safe for 600 euros, which was immediately paid to them by the manager, but they had lost their passports and other stuff, most of it they were able to claim off their house insurance on their return.
The "jemmy" they had used to prise the shelf away from the fittings also damaged a leather coat, which his wife had travelled in, which had been hung in the wardrobe.

So, if you hire a safe, read the small print on the receipt or ask exactly how much the hotel has insured each individual safe.

Don't keep the receipt for the safe, traveller's cheques numbers, or large amounts of cash in them.
Make a note of the details/numbers of your passport on a piece of paper and carry all these bits of paper around with you, or hide them somewhere safe.
