Oh olly, maybe this will give you a rough idea of costs,a 4 course meal inc steak at cousins restaurant was 19 lira,£8,drinks were BOGOF all night,a small crusty loaf 00.20 lira, large bottle of coca cola from supermarket was under £1,all inc boat trip £10,jeep safari £11,turkish bath including oil massage £8,our sunbeds were free at our apartments, turkish bread is lovely and I take my own cheese with me,O yes you can get a good english breakfast from £1,as I said in the previous post I ate steak every night, spends about £550,that was in Marmaris, that did not include duty frees, and I didnt buy any souveniers etc.

Sorry point taken Nicole/Celine.

I was only using your £200 as an example.

However my point remains that people need to be realistic when telling people how much money they should take. Yes Turkey is cheaper than the UK. But you are still going to get through a fair wedge of money.
I think Strewberry7's quote of about £30 a night on food/few drinks for 2 is about right.
Obviously if someone is on a tighter budget or chooses not to spend so much they should be honest about this, pointing out the places they are eating in.

This comment is not saying that Nicole or Celine are being dishonest. It's just from reading these boards over this and many other summers. Some people make the most amazing claims about how cheap Turkey is.
I'm sure they must convince some people that the food, drink etc is being given away

Lesleyjane i agree turkey is not cheap and im one of those people that would spend loads on holiday if we didnt go allincusive.Last year we went to olu deniz allinclusive but still spent £500.This only included one meal out and we went for drinks twice. There were myself my hubby and 2 sons. The meal alone cost us £40 and this wasnt a three course meal just main for all of us and 2 starters,no dessert.we did have a bottle of wine and a bear and 2 soft drinks for the kids but if you times this by 14 then thats £560 on just dinners!!

I can see why your meal would have been expensive, but I thought the Turkish were stamping out that sort of thing?

"we did have a bottle of wine and a bear"

I read it as the kids got a bear and 2 soft drinks! I thought it was some sort of promotion.

I just got back yesterday and the exchange rate dropped dramatically when we were there at the start of the holiday we received 2.60 which dropped down to 2.35 last day we were there.

This will have a big effect on your spending money as you are losing around £10 on every hundred you exchange.

It's absolutely no skin off my nose, how little, or how much, people spend on their holiday in Turkey.

I've merely given the prices that I know are correct.

There does seem to be a few people around who will insist Turkey is dirt cheap. And if you dare to disagree, those same said people become extremely defensive, and accuse you of lying.

I haven't a clue why they do it; neither do I care. But the fact is they are wrong in their calculations - and the proof of that is in the diminishing numbers of tourists visiting Turkey, and the ever increasing number of people complaining how expensive Turkey has become.

I'll say no more on the matter; and will leave it for yourselves to decide. Just make sure you take an emergency back-up of funds when your money runs out!

If anyone took notice of these few people who insist you can have a good time on about a tenner a day - they'll be terribly let down when they discover that's rot!

P.S. Kath: I don't scan the posts - I just read them properly (when possible  )

Strawberry ... if you could only spend as much time considering your replies as you do considering the questions, then perhaps this forum would be a much happier and friendlier place.

There are a lot of aspects to consider when weighing up how much money you "need" on holiday. I was surprised at the variance in prices recently from Icmeler to Turunc.

In Icmeler there were plenty of bars & restaurants selling beer for 2.5 Lira, whereas in Turunc (next resort along) we looked in a number of places (including those away from the beach) and they were all charging 4 Lira - 60% more.

I've already commented that I noticed Turkey now seems significantly more expensive, but also it does still depend on whether you can be bothered to look for better value, or take the approach that you're on holiday and don't care about a few quid either way.

For example there were restaurants in Icmeler that were charging 2.5 Lira (and a few less than that) for a large beer and were offering free starters, deserts and coffee with main meals and would pick you up from your apartment (and in one case drop you back afterwards as well). This means that an evening of a nice 3-course meal (plus bread!) and a few beers can easily be had for less than 30 Lira.

However if you take a taxi to the same restaurant, want a bottle of wine (or two) with your meal and decide to order a king prawn starter or a special desert then the cost of an evening in exactly the same place will be double or treble. Neither of these approaches are right or wrong, they are just options.

Cheers.

We came back from marmaris a couple of weeks ago and we spent £2000, there was 2 adults and 3 young children in our party staying self catering, the money went on breakfast/lunch, drinks around pool, evening meal and a few drinks plus some clothes to take home.
Our evening meal was coming to about £40 but i found that lots of the money went on soft drinks at the hotel.
As a whole i think Turkey is cheaper than here but not half as cheap as it use to be :(

I thought this site was about Holiday Truths - I don't see what benefit any member could get by me being false, insincere, and giving wrong information.

I'm sure no-one would thank me if they went to Turkey for the first time, and ran out of money - due to me pretending that Turkey was cheap as chips! :x

It was actually Crispy who wanted me to reply to this thread (and I bit the bait). It was obviously done purposely. For some reason, he/she (along with two other diehard Marmarites) resent the fact that I disagree with them about the rising cost in Turkey.

I think it would be a terrible shame if people felt restricted to tell the

Truth for fear of being thought unfriendly! There'd be absolutely no point in having this forum at all.

Well I think some people Dream on when they say they have only spent so much, like some who have only 3 drinks per night yes you're not going to go through much money well not as much as us going out at say 20.00 hrs and not getting back to the apartments till around 00.30 hrs. £50.00 or 125.00 lira a night for the 2 of us and that's eating and drinking like Kings and Queens :)

This year we seen many people going to the supermarkets buying bread and butter and drinks then eating and drinking in their apartments, obviously they are not spending as much as we are, and as her indoors said she's on Holiday and not cooking what so ever :)

I am not going to enter a debate on the forum as to what is fact or fiction. Although I have to say I havent questioned whether what you have said is the truth or not.

However, sometimes it's worth stepping back and reading what you have written and the tone it may come across with.

Please continue any further discussions by pm facility.

it was my first time to marmaris last year and funny enough i asked the same question back then.

somebody told me i would need atleast a 1000 quid for 2 weeks.

unfortunetly i didnt take into consideration buying gifts and so on.

im going next june 08 and im gonna be taking about 2,000. i'm a handbag fanatic, and i have 2 very greedy boys (my other half, n 3 yr old son)

Really its upto you to decide how much you wanna take, i would take some back up cash just incase you run out.

happy hols

We were in Marmaris at the end of August. Myself, wife and our three girls aged 15, 14 and 7and we spent almost £2000 in two weeks. Obviously we were s/c and ate out every day and had a few drinks in the evening and also went on four trips. Two years ago we went to Menorca and spent a lot more than that (and that was without the trips), so whilst I would agree Turkey is maybe not dirt cheap you certainly get more for your money than other places.

I have to say I've never found Turkey dirt cheap, but we tend to eat out at slightly more expensive restaurants. It's the same with the shopping there's the cheap fakes and the good quality stuff. At least the choice is there and you can still have a good holiday without spending a lot of money, unlike some other places we've been.
