We have done this in the past, ususlly if we have friends at the hotel or apartments. Always pop into other hotels for the evening entertainment and never had a problem, i think hoteliers are ok about this as your spending your money in their bars

I don't think they mind at all as long as you spend some money at their bar or have snacks etc. I think they might be slightly iffy if you were to come along and help yourself to sun loungers then proceed to start eating your self prepared picnic or something!

And especially those places whose pool areas are not heaving with people (ie shortage of sunbeds) would welcome any extra trade and as someone said above you might decide you like it so much you'll book a holiday there.

On our last summer holiday ('05) in Tenerife we stayed at Parque Santiago 3 apts and they were very strict about other people using their pool. In fact we had to carry passes to show we were booked in there and these were asked for sometimes twice a day, every day. We often saw non-residents being asked to leave which was very

It also ensured that there were plenty of sun loungers for the guests booked to stay there.

I think it may depend on the individual accommodations. We stayed in the algarve in quite an up market self catering accommodation and we were given 4 pool passes and they were checked by pool attendants. People who tried to get in without were turned away.

Some self-catering accomodations offer the use of a pool at a named larger complex or hotel very close by, it's probably preferable to get something like that if you can just to be on the safe side. :D

In Kos you can use any of the hotel pools as they are considered to be public pools. The private ones are signposted, but most were open to all. I'm not sure if this was a Greek thing or just Kos.

Thats the same in the hotels and apartments I've stayed in on Crete too Mark.

And in Turkey, I always use other pools away from where I'm staying - I always ask at reception or the bar before I get settled, out of courtesy, and its never a problem. As others have said, if you're buying drinks or snacks at the pool, you're bringing in business.

I've stayed at hotels where people have been asked to leave because they have come from outside. Have to admit I would be a mite aggreived if I could not use some of the facilities of a hotel I was staying at (eg. sunbeds ) because someone from outside had bagged them.

A few years back we were on holiday in Limasol , booked into a hotel, which had a pool. When we were in a nearby hotel one night for a drink and chatting to the night manager he said that we could use their pool at any time. We only went the once but on a visit to another hotel pool we were charged £7 each for using their facilities (sunbeds, pool etc.) fair enough, as we hadn`t thought to ask first. Some places will be happy to see you some guests might not.

Thanks for all your replies which is the main were quite positive but of course there's always a flip side to the coin.

Having weighed everything up I think we'll stick with the pool we know - we stayed at their apartments a few years back but they rent them out via a different operator now and we can't book with them again :(

When we went last year we asked if we could use the pool as we often use the supermarket the owners have and they were quite happy for us to do so without charging us.

In all honesty altho' it's a bit of a trek to get to we usually have it to ourselves for the first couple of hours which is perfect. Local Spanish kids sometimes come in and use it and they'll join in playing with our kids which is nice.

I think knowing my luck if we went into a different hotel we'd end up getting asked to leave and I'd be horrified if that happened  so will stick with what I know.
