My long haul holidays are usually planned well in advance but one week or shorter ones are often last minute. When the weather is very poor we might just decide on the spur of the moment to head south to (usually) better weather. Of course it helps being retired and living in Southern Germany as we can drive to Italy in about three hours. My last holiday to Gran Canaria was decided on, booked and taken all within a matter of days.
we try to plan in advance, mainly due to having to make sure we can book time off work at the same time!
We plan ours but I love the thought of just booking and shooting off on the day so to speak.
I used to work with a chap who would pack and go up to the airport and go on really cheap packages available on the day or sometimes the next morning. These deals were printed on sheets available at the entrance to Bristol airport, How exiting driving up to the airport and not knowing where you would end up!

It does sound exciting in theory but these days I would be worried I'd end up in a hell hole. Since I found HT, I won't book anywhere without doing my research, although pre HT days we did once do an allocation on arrival and had an excellent hotel and holiday.
Main holidays are planned and booked well in advance and tbh I don't do many weekends away as my budget doesn't stretch to include them but if I did have an unexpected windfall and time off work, I could be persuaded to drop everything and go
Plan in advance.
The idea of deciding a few days before we go away always sounds appealing but I am wary that the accom may be a let down if I havent checked it out first.

We did have an impromptu one last year and I must say it was very exciting (but we did know the accommodation) to just pack and go. If I see a good deal I'll book well in advance, as these days there don't seem to be any really good late deals left.....Caz
I usually book in advance. When the kids we little we used to look for a cheap deal for a second holiday, and would book on the spur of the moment, perhaps the day before going, and do allocation on arrival. The advantage was the cost, but the disadvantage was taking whatever seats were left on flights -flying out from Aberdeen and coming back to Stanstead for example. I wouldn't do that now!
in advance for big hols and a week or so for short breaks. have to take school hols as work in school, so no cheap deals for us then . xphx
Definately pre kid, we always did impromptu, allocated on arrival holidays, oh, the freedom of that, not to mention the cheap price !! But for the last 10 years since our daughter was born, well, its all about the research and planning, finding a complete holiday, ie, location and accomodation to suit us all as a family, so we've had to think about it well in advance, mind you, she's a proper well traveled little star, so , I reckon we could just take off at a moments notice to some unknown destination and she wouldn't be phased !
I have booked a few last minute holidays but now they have to be planned in advance as we have to go in school holidays. I enjoy planning in advance anyway, I love all the looking forward to the holiday.
Hubby's firm has everyone with children racing for the school holidays for time off. We don't have kids, but it would be nice, JUST ONCE to have a holiday in August!

I'd be happy JUST ONCE not to have to pay school holiday prices. You can get your hols far cheaper by going in June, or the start of September and the weather is still hot then.
One of my best friends is a teacher and we've been wanting to go away together for years, but can't because she can't take time off during the term and hubby's colleagues get first dibs on the school hols.
Im a student learning disability nurse/social worker, and the only time i get off is 2 weeks at christmas, a couple of weeks at easter, and 2 weeks at the beginning of september when my boy goes back to school.
Therefore, last month i booked our easter holiday to the Dominican Republic for 17nights, and we got it at a good price considering we are going at easter.
but think yourself lucky that you actually get to have time off with your children in the summer.
Hi yummymummy. My children are grown up, I can only go away in school hols as I'm a learning support assistant, which also means no getting away from kids even during my hols. Not that I don't like children, you understand but it would be nice to have a bit of peace now and then
Theres an easy solution to that Shirley , book an adult only hotel and don't fly with family airlines, or better still book premium seats and have a nice relaxing journey
Seriously, I do like August and the hot weather and don't mind the children too much- it's just the inflated prices that I strongly object to.
I understand why you would want a holiday away from the children, i would probably think the same if i were you.
It has got me thinking, what do all the teachers do for their holidays in the summer, do they choose adult hotels? to get some peace and quiet.
I hope you find something suitable.
What countries do you like visiting during August?
You could maybe find a reasonable flight with Ryanair, easyjet etc, and choose a small friendly guesthouse or hotel.
If you need any help then i will be more than happy to have a look for you , but then again you seem to post on here a lot so i am sure you do enough holiday searching
