The security checks are the same for all nationalities. There is no bearing on if you are on a visa-waiver.

Domestic travel requires you carry and produce a government issued photo ID. I normally use my UK driving licence (the new style one like a credit card) as it's easy to keep in a wallet. Never had any problems.

The only time you may be picked out for additional security checks (watch for the SSS written on your board card!) is normally if you have booked a one-way ticket, at the last minute or in cash. Even then the additiona checks are not too much of an issue.

Ok, Do you need evidence of "proof of itinery / lodgings" as you do when entering the US?

New Homeland security regulations stipulate that you must provide details of your US address (or at least first night) on the visa waiver form/visa form. Very shortly the airlines will also need to collect this data in advance of your UK departure so that it may be transmitted to the US authorities prior to your arrival. The two addresses given must match. Airlines seem to be trying to find a workable system to caputure this information in a managable way. Tour operators can obviously give this data in advance to the airline, but if you are not booked with a tour operator it is likely that the information will have to be given at check-in.

Back to the waiver/visa form. You use to be able to simply write "fly-drive" or "cruise" on the address section. This is no longer permitted. Make sure you have a hotel name/address with you. As for how they would ever check this I'm not sure - probably more US red tape procedure that can never be followed through or would be double checked.

Hi, fully agree with traveller. We were expecting to be asked for everything, Itinery etc, we just showed our driving licence. What did freak me out was self service check in's - especially when they asked you to swipe your credit card and everyone who was traveling with you came up on screen, couldnt understand this at first as at this particular time i'd not used my credit card yet. Do they do this proceedure in the uk?? ive always gone by car in this country so wouldn't know.

I would suggest http://www.jetblue.com. Not only good prices if you book well in advance, but probably one of the better services on board as well.

Me and two friends are planning to do a West Coast roadtrip in June but at the end spend a few days on the East Coast.

Has anyone got good/bad experiences of budget airlines in the US, or can recommend a website where domestic flights can be easily searched for?

We want to get from Phoenix to D.C. and I've tried the obvious suspects - Southwest, AA, Delta etc.

Any suggestions for good budget airlines would be appreciated!

Actually, JetBlue have a fairly poor reputation at the moment due to a series of recent flight delays and people having to wait to disembark from the aircraft for hours (I believe an extreme case was 8 hours). Although they have put policies in place to rectify this, their reputation took quite a hit and it was all over the news here.

However, I'm sure most airlines have their share of horror stories and JetBlue ARE reasonably priced and, prior to recent events, did have a solid reputation.

Jetblue and Southwest are my preferred "low-cost" carriers in the USA. Your choice will however really probably depend on your routing and the current fares on offer. I tend to do a general search on Expedia to see what main carriers fly the route I want, plus also check the airport web sites to see what low-cost carriers ply the route I want - then go direct to each carrier's web site to find the best deal.

Have you tried US Airways (American West) who have a large flight programme from Phoenix?

For searching,I use http://www.kayak.com or airgorilla.com- they will show you a good selection of flights. Then I book via the airline direct. Southwest airlines doesn't come up in their system though- and they are one of the few airlines with good fares,good customer service.
