Just returned from a villa rental in Portugal. we noticed a bit of a smell on arrival but just put it down to being normal. Whilst at the villa the drains blocked up at the end of our first week, a builder was called out, the blockage he said was due to a build up of toilet paper, we hadn't caused it, just compounded the issue. He said that he had told the owners before that the drains couldn't handle toilet paper (he built the villa). No where were there any signs saying not to use paper! One of our party had to help the builder clear the blockage which took 2.5 hours, raw sewage came up into a bath and started leaking onto the patio by the pool. We basically had a whole day wasted and then from that day had to adopt the "Greek" method of paper in a bin! Thus necessitating a daily trip to the bins on the streets to dump our rubbish. The smell continued into our second week and rendered parts of the patio unuseable. We didn't say anything to the caretaker as the drains were fundamentally not up to the job and we didn't want anymore hassle. The caretaker had said about putting bleach down the drains but the builder had said this shouldn't be done so we obviously sided with the professional. The Villa was built in 2012. On our return I sent the Villa owner a detailed complaint and asked for a part refund. She replied by basically refuting what had been said by the builder, of course a cynical person might come to the conclusion that once the builder realised that by telling us the truth it might cost him future work? The owner said that the caretaker had "tackled" the builder and he had withdrawn his comments but we most definitely heard him say what he did. Is it fair of us to ask for a partial refund? If one of our party had not assisted the builder we would have had to move to a hotel which would have cost the owners a lot of money as there was five of us. Any views greatly appreciated thanks.
