my friend has just come back from holiday in majorca and it seems that things were quite expensive out there having never been to that area does anyone know if its more expensive there than the costa brava area
thanks
jan
Unless you've got someone who's recently come back from both a holiday in Costa Brava and Majorca, don't know that you'll get your answer as someone will need to have been to both places to get a proper comparison.
As I explained in a post in another thread, Mallorca is not expensive when measured in Euro prices. It's the drop in value of the Pound that's the problem, and that is the same in all of Spain.
As the other contributor said, maybe someone who has recently holidayed in both areas could explain it better.

I'm afraid there isn't anywhere in the Euro-zone you can go these days where you will get a real cheap holiday, and add to that Australia and New Zealand in my personal experience.
you will always get a island resort costing a little more than a mainland place.its cheaper to drive the goods to mainland.than having to ferry goods over or fly them in.

I'm not clear on how this contributes to the debate. Is it a general opinion founded on intuition, or is it objective fact based on wide experience of both the Costa Brava and Mallorca ? Please clarify.
branded names are very high in price.so try the local products.one thing this year and past two years.berr in some bars in go in have not gone up.infact in some they have even gone down a little or had to do the bogof.which i think lowers the tone of bars.
but like said.one euro = £ ?
I understood all of that from your first post, but how do the Mallorca prices compare with the Costa Brava prices ?
Nothing at all to do with poor rates either as I was comparing straight forward euro pricing, two lagers and two soft drinks 12 euro in a cheap bar in Alcudia compared to 5-6euros in the Costa Blanca.
I am of th opinion that the resorts around the Costa Brava tend to be a little more expensive, and this has been confirmed by Spanish locals I have talked to..You have Barcelona, the second largest city in Spain, and Gerona.People who work in these cities live in the suburbs.Calella Malgrat etc, are only an hour away.Take the city of London for example where do the comuters live, and are the prices more expensive in these suburbs?
Pollensa, you seem to be being a bit harsh on djwoody there. What he's saying makes sense - we only holiday in Majorca so I couldn't do a comparison but have heard that in general Majorca/Ibiza/Menorca are more expensive than the mainland and I think djwoody was only saying perhaps why, that was the case.
Mrabulldog, looks like Stardust2000 has been able to give you a definite answer.
But he was comparing the Costa BLANCA with Mallorca, not the Costa BRAVA (and basing it on the cost of a pint).
Pollensa, you seem to be being a bit harsh on djwoody there.
But the opinion of "pipefitter" is exactly the opposite of "djwoody", so was he being hard too ? Was I really so hard on what was a simple hypothesis not backed up by any experience?
To be honest the answer to this question is no clearer than it was to start with. Nobody has yet given an answer based on experience of both areas and broadly based on general living experience (not what they paid for a pint, man cannot live by beer alone, although some might try).
alright benidorm is a dam site cheaper than ibiza.trust me i go to both places.ibiza more than beni.even the hotels are not cheap to stay in ibiza.like i say islands cost more.you can live cheap if you shop around.depends what standard you like to live.
The tone of Pipefitter's reply wasn't confrontational/abrupt. Absolutely no need to jump down anyone's throat for giving an opinion, Costa Blanca/Costa Brava - still mainland Spain at the end of the day! Jeez, I bet Mrabulldog wished they'd never asked!
Ok folks - back on track please.
I bet Mrabulldog wished they'd never asked!
Don't know about that but I bet he's wishing he could get a reply that was actually based on practical experience rather than conjecture.
Just to add. I have been to Mallorca this year and have just come back from Calella. So have a unbiast idea of prices.

On a broad comparison of purchases what did you find ? Was the Costa Brava more expensive, cheaper or the same ?
