The Hotel Varshava is a 2*, see HERE

Bulgarian tap water can be heavily mineralised, which may explain the state of the shower. You got the internet access you asked for, but the speed reflects the state of the telephone system in some parts of Golden Sands. To have a satisfactory internet connection you really need a 4 or 5* hotel with a business suit.

Milk I would expect to be 'watered down', as it will have been made up from powder. The bulk of Bulgarian milk production makes cheese, Bulgarians themselves don't put milk in tea or coffee, and they don't like breakfast cereal.

I'm sorry to say this Sheila, but you went 2* and got what you paid for. When you asked to be moved, it would have to have been to a 3* hence the extra cost. There is only one other 2* in the resort which is likely to have been much the same. As these old hotels are renovated, they become upgraded in star rating.

Also, with most TO's, if you end your stay at the hotel originally booked and go off and do your own thing, it is deemed that you have curtailed your holiday and they will have no more responsibility for you, regardless of the complaint.

In their holiday info pages it says that their 2 star rarting means basic with no frills but value for money and that rooms and bathrooms will be small. It goes on to say that typical Bulgarian bathrooms are small and if you require a large one, you are better to book a 3 or 4 star.

I have to say that the pictures on the link Peter posted look dreadful and I certainly would not liked to have stayed there myself.

What else was wrong with the place?

Hi Louychew,

Bulgarian star ratings are described on THIS web page.

Balkan Holidays ratings are the same as those of the Ministry of Tourism.

Hi Sheila, as you've just found out, hotels in Bulgaria can be pretty rough and many hotels are stuck in the 70's. The country is still gearing up for tourism in many ways and things you'd take for granted at home don't mean necessarily mean the same thing there - e.g the "milk". 2* there is quite basic - think 2* SC accom in Greece.
