going on mar 1st 2008, flying to brazil & sailing back to palma, has anyone done any transatlantic with island cruises? either way, any info would be great, cabins, food, drink, trips, sea rough, sunbeds etc
can you take alcohol & soft drinks on board?
at the moment I have no info re flight out, I understand we land somewhere on the way either paris or lisbon, I think.
I am getting concerned about the lack of info as I have to book a flight to heathrow from newcastle, not bothered coming back as we are not going to fly back to gatwick with island cruises, we are staying for 1 night in palma as it is our wedding anniversary, I have booked a flight back to newcastle, it seemed silly to fly to gatwick then sit in airport all day as there are very few flights to newcastle during the day.
First thing I would advise you on is this. Do not book anything regarding your departure flights, as they tend to change them a few weeks before you depart.
We have not been on the Star, so can't advise you on cabins. We were on Diamond deck, which was good. Forward enough so as not to get any engine noise.
It will be very hot in Brasil, but days at sea will always have a breeze to cool you off.
We only did one excursion, and that was in Salvador. I wouldn't reccomend it, as we only went up the coast and then they dropped us off at a shopping mall for 2 hours. The mall had very expensive shops, the only good thing was the food floor.
I don't know which ports of call in Brazil you will be doing on the Star, but I am sure you will enjoy them.
At Cape Verde we didn't get off the ship, people who did said that it wasn't worth it.
Ou first port of call was Gibraltar, where we did some shopping - cigarettes and booze, which they didn't take off us when we got back on board. Just keep them out of sight. Your cannot buy booze on the ship to take into your cabin.
If the Star is anything like the Escape you will have a wonderful time. The staff are so friendly, and the Captain joins in. He likes to meet the passengers. He will even get thrown into the pool for the crossing of the equator.
Beer was about £2.70 a pint. And the shorts about the same.
Take a water bottle with you, and get it filled daily by one of the staff in the outside restaurant.
You should not come up against any rough seas. But take something warm for the evenings when you are getting nearer to Europe.
If you can think of anything else you need to know, just ask.
I know you will enjoy you cruise.

we are on coral deck near front to avoid noise

You must do the full Rio trip, but it is rather expensive. Many people found it cheaper to get a taxi to take them around. It was about £80 to book on the ship.
I don't think your cruise will be stopping at Buzios, is it. That was our favourite place of all in Brazil.
At any of the ports of call you get better value by taking a taxi. Talk to any of the staff on board, and ask them the best beaches etc. to go to. They've done this trip before, and know the none tourist places to go to. Which are better than the ship tours.
