Just don't get them started on deep-fried Mars bars...
my FAVOURITE!
Whatever lahmacun is (and in the beach bar we ate in in October they had lahmacun, and next to it is said turkish pizza with lamb) it is very very nice...and I'm now very hungry.
I live in South East London & the restaurant I go to is called Meze Mangle, the food is lovely & the Lahmacun's are only £1 to take away.
I'm defo gonna eat more "Turkish" this time i go away but need some names of good restaurants in Marmaris as i find alot of them try to cater too much for the British, & i've heard that the places i used to eat along the beach have been knocked down I've never been to the area where Tansas is, so is it worth me getting the Dolmus to there?
Jo x
Might as well sample the Bazaar while i'm there, Is it open all the time?
We have also had them at Nefis Pide and Kardeniz both in the old village.
I'm really looking forward now to heading into Seray Zetas & trying some of this, sounds delicious.............
you lot have made my stressfull week very enjoyable, i have had to laugh at this thread so much passion, call it what you will i will just carry on eating lol
I am sure we went to the place Jay mentioned
The best places we had kebabs were in a typical turkish place in Icemeler (sorry cant remember name but it was near to where the Dolumus`s stop.) We had chicken ones on a flat bread with salad and yogart sauce. I tried Lahmacun in here too and it was served fresh and yummy. I think if you stick to the Turkish places that cook every thing fresh and have a more limited menu and am sure you wont go wrong.
Meat is expensive in Turkey and it is reflecting on the prices and quality of food at the moment so you may well find that you prefer your kebabs back in the uk. But the sun and atmosphere do make to food enjoyable.
Thanks for the tips, I've wrote them places down
Lahmacun (like genuine pizza you buy in Italy) is always very thin, spread with just a small amount of tomato paste/tomatoes, herbs, and a sprinkling of spicy minced lamb (Neopolitan pizza has cheese instead of meat) The difference between Lahmacun, Neopolitan Pizza and American Pizza (or all those Domino Pizzas etc) is that they are always baked in a wood-fired oven which makes them crispy on the bottom and gives them a lovely smokey flavour. I think the only difference in the actual dough is that the Turks add olive oil to theirs. And of course, they roll theirs up into a wrap shape.
I've had loads of them in Turkey, and frequently buy them in Green Lanes, London as I pass through there weekly. They're all cooked in exactly the same way, and taste just like they do in Turkey (if not better). But you can't beat eating them with an ice cold glass of Efes overlooking the harbour!
You can actually make your own - they're very easy to make providing you have the right spices. You just need a Chimenara (sp?) which is a Mexican style outside chimney which you put wood logs in to heat your patio. You can buy one from Argos for about £50 and REALLY impress your friends! Some people are now having wood-burning stoves built into their gardens, but they're very expensive, and unless you're obsessed with pizzas or lahmacuns they're not worth the expense! But a Chimenara does exactly the same thing, and keeps your tootsies warm too!
Strawberry
