Hi ,
we are a married cpl in our 40's who have visited Goa the past 2 yrs and much as we love it (the beaches, the food, the sea,the sunsets, the cheap living and of course the people) we are seriously thinking of visiting Kerala in about Feb 2008 for 2 weeks. We dont need luxury BUT we aint back packers either!!!! Any advice would be most welcome. ie potential highlights ,trips etc, can we only fly from London?? We really will welcome any advice

We have also booked for Kerela in March 07 after visiting Goa 3 times. We have booked air conditioned hotel with TC for 2 weeks for the two of us for £823. This is without transfers I begrudge paying the £40 they were asking for them. If it is anything like Goa a taxi should be cheap enough.

A taxi from airport to Kovolam should cost around 300rps
and takes about 15mins,we would not pay TC £40 either
a right rip off. we go on march 1st,what about you?

I'll be interested to hear from anyone who has spent New Year in Keral as my friends are seriously thinking of going there for New Year.

They haven't been to India before and are even thinking of moving out there in the future. My friend works with an Indian doctor who has recommended this area.

Is it correct that Keral is a dry state as I can't see my friends going if it is :yikes

hotels serve it ,you can also buy it in Goverment

Kerala is not a dry state. Alcohol is available everywhere and there are plenty of liquor shops selling a wide range of spirits both local and imported. The local brands are fine and cheap but certainly not as cheap as Goa!. A bottle of local vodka for example will cost about 280 - 300 rups. There may be less availability in the restaurants at Kovalam due to the high cost of obtaining a licence. Nonetheless they get around this by disguising the drinks in various ways! Still not sure whether any of them have licences.

Kingfisher is the common brand of beer. Not strong I am told, but ok.

I have spent a lot of time travelling throughout Kerala and other parts of India and have never had a problem obtaining alcohol. (God, that sounds desperate!!)

Hi 'Lady' reclothes to wear in the evening as my sister and I are dressing up type people we usually wore silky trousers/very thin cotton baggy trousers/long wrap around skirts most of which we bought in Goa and we wore nice beaded, silky strappy tops. On the backwaters trip we took a long wrap around skirt and a long sleeved top, the kind that are in all the shops in Kerala for a pound or so as we didn't want to get bitten by the mozzies. These were also useful when eating out at the restaurants on the back of Lighthouse Beach. We also wore flat jeweled thong type sandals that we bought cheap in Goa. I wouldn't recommend high heels! Hope you have a great time, I am sure you will.

Thanks for the quick reply, that is the kind of thing I thought to wear.

Appears to be "technical" delay !
I have loads of photo's as we had a week in Kovalam and a week on tour. It is a truely fabulous state when you look around with a fabulous mix of scenery. Kovalam is very much under developed compared to Goa from what I can see.

thanks Dave
shall look out for them
