I'd give it a day or so. Krabi Sands (and surrounding area) was on dial-up when I last visited as the area was not broadband enabled and this was not always reliable.
Flux we are thinking of visiting this area next March can you let me know research of Hotels that you have chosen. Can you fly from Chaing Mai to Krabi? This is my first DIY as well.
But there is a daily flight from Chiang Mai to Phuket (Thai Airways), which is a 2 1/2 - 3 hour road transfer to Krabi (bare in mind Krabi Airport is 30-45 minutes from beach resorts - at least it was for me), so it's not too bad.
If you do fly from Chiang-Mai to Phuket get the direct flight rather than waste time transferring in Bangkok. Once flew from Mae Hong Sorn via Chiang-Mai, and BKK to Phuket then land transferred to Krabi...took best part of a day. The transfer from Phuket to Krabi is quite a nice run though.
One of the highlights of our trips to Krabi has been visiting the Tiger Cave Temple (not to be confused with the Tiger temple near the River Kwai). If your reasonably fit you can do the climb to the top of the mountain (1200 + steps some at the beginning more like climbing a ladder). On a clear day the views from the top are spectacular - over Phang-Nga bay and Krabi town.
Not sure exactly what you are after but i will post a few links to reviews for the places we are staying and a map of phi phi with all the resorts on it
As has already been said to get to krabi you need to connect from Bangkok , there are now 2 airports offering internal flights. We are using airasia as this is the only airline that will fly us back to Suvarnabhumi International Airport to catch our flight home.
