Lefkada is my second most favourite island. We also stayed in Nidri. Something for everyone. It's such a beautiful and green island. We hired a jeep as a treat ( which I think is a must) and drove all around the island. The best beach at Porto Katsiki has the most gorgeous sunset and the bluest sea. It goes very deep very quickly as it is very wavy due to the winds from the Ionion sea. Not really for children. If you can find Engrimi go there as it is deserted. You will have to go over a dirt track to get there.
Nidri also has a nice enough beach to use on an every day basis. It's touristy to the point where it feels comfortable, but not too confrontational. The prices were reasonable too.

Went To Nidri last year for a week going again this year for two weeks
lots of boat trips to choose from and a lot of boats going every day to take you to the caves and into them trips to Kefalonia Ithaca beach to do some snorkeling also going round onassis island and a swim stop and plenty more. :D
most of the places on the island can be reached by local bus a visit to the water fall at Nidri is a must long walk well worth it go early in the morning to miss the midday sun
people very friendly food great beach not very wide but sea is great very warm lots of water sports have a good time. Maureen

Lefkas is a fantastic island - nidri is a big resort but most of lefkass is pretty untouched by tourism. it is well worth hiring a car for a few days to see around. the west coast beaches are some of the most spectacular in the world. - kathisma, porto katsiki & egremnoi. but pretty impossible to get to without a car. also worth a visit are some of the inland mountain villages. near to nidri, the rachi waterfalls are pretty spectaculr.

go into lefkas town and try some of the lamb chops (make sure they are local) - you will be totally amazed. the flavour of the herbs the sheep eat can be tasted in the meat. it's one of the most amazing things i have every eaten.

boat trips go out to the islet of meganisi (past scorpios, the onassis island), and also to fiscardo in kefalonia and to frikes on ithaca. all make for good days out and one of the best ways to see around the greek islands is by boat.

have a look at the friends of the ionian site before you go. they have lots of info.

Hi
I was there last month, weather was great, stayed at Agios Ionnis on the north coast, near to Lefkas town.
Ionnis is by the lagoon at the foot of the hills, great beach yet deserted, windy in the afternoon good for Wind/Kite surfing.
I have been to the island three times in the last ten years. My favourite is Nikitas on the N/E coast which was very quiet this year.

Anything specific you need to know ?

I have stayed in Vassiliki and Ag. Nikitas (NW coast near to the superb beach of Kathisma), both places are good places to stay in, Vassiliki usually having a ferry connection down to Kefalonia. You can also go from the main town to Prevezza, then to Parga and cross to Paxos, so the island can be incorporated in an Ionion island, island hopping itinerary. The main place to avoid is package tourist Nidri an overdeveloped ribbon development with grotty beaches.

I agree, Nidri had changed so much, I did not recognise it. Small beach but good for watersports has become really touristy since I was last there.

There are good ferry connections from the south, if you get the chance to get to Cephalonia then Fiscardo is lovely.

Ithaca is sleepy but you have to watch the ferries, there were only two per day from Vassiliki ...

Get a car, and drive round the island, and do some island hopping ...

We have just returned from a sailing holiday around the Ionian. We prefer Lefkas to Kefallonia and also love Megannisi and Ithaca. We sat in a restaurant in Lefkas and watched the opening of the Olympics, what a fantastic atmosphere. Our favourite spot on Lefkas is Nikiana, only a small village with a small stretch of beach, but really great for a weeks holiday.

We personally did not like Fiscardo, we have been twice now on a yacht and find it far too busy and full of posey people. Everything there is twice as expensive as other villages, it is not true Greece.

We enjoy Lefkas Town as it is still small and not commercialised, mind you it was a lot busier than 2 years ago.

Any questions please ask
