Hi. I hope you like Anaxos. We went there about 3 years ago. It's quite quiet, but I think you are staying in the right hotel, its brilliant. We stayed in rooms on the front, but ate at the Anoxos Hotel a lot of the time, then stayed in the bar, they are very friendly. You can get the bus into Molyvos, which is very pretty, but very hilly. Might be going back ourselves in June. Not sure yet. I can't remember how much we spent in 2 weeks, both liking a drink with meals and then OH having more in the bar afterwards, but I know we commented on how cheap we thought it was. There are loads of little tavernas around all priced around the same. We thought that there was more choice of food here than on any other Greek Island we have been to. Hope you enjoy.

Went to Lesvos quite sometime ago cannot remeber the exact year but really loved the place we stayed in Petra but did visist Anaxous, found it quite cheap to some Greek Islands but was before the Euro, rather a long journey from the airport, Hotel we stayed in not very good even though it was with Portland, but it was tyheir first year in the trade so hopefully things will have improved by now, all in all found Lesvos a lovely place and hope one day to return.

thanks to all for your replies, it sounds like lesvos will be the perfect getaway for us.
last year we visited zante (alikanas) which was a lovely resort, but we felt it had been spoilt a little with a few too many brit-style pubs, there was also a hell of a lot of rubbish piled up in road side wheely bins which did not do anything for the scenery, or the scent of the air! i we have chosen lesvos becouse we love greece the way it is for itself, i hate the idea that the greeks feel they need to somehow modify themselves into being more british in order to attract us, they should be proud of their own facinating culture. :D

Fortunately there are still plenty of Greek destinations that have not been conquered by the Brits and Lesvos is a good example. Even the main Brit favourites like Corfu and Zante still have areas with Greek character. Have a look at http://www.imagesofgreece.co.uk. Dont rule out the mainland, the Peloponese and the Pelion regions are largely unspoilt.

hi :D

We went to lesvos last ( first week) September. When we arrived it was pouring with rain, you can imagine what we thought! but we were lucky the next 6 days were glorious, we couldnt of asked for better weather. it was about 25 - 30 in the evenings you would need to take jumper if you were out for a stroll.
We stayed at the Chrisoula apartments across the road from the Anaxos Hotel. All the people we spoke to who were staying there said how good the hotel and the food was. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from we loved the Aggolas on the beeach front. It was owned by a greek family. In the afternoon the father and son would go out in there fishing boat leave there nets and go back at 7am for the catch, this would be what you ate in the evening on a charcoal grill, which you would watch them cook, while sipping your wine :glynis . we loved the fish for 2 people 18 euros the wine was 6 euros a litre Methos 2 euros.
It is a very layed back resort we found everybody very friendly. Anaxos Hill, is a nice place to walk to the views at the top are fantastic a nice methos goes down well when you reach the top.
We got the local bus in to Molivos and walked up to the castle through the cobbled streets with lots of shops on the way.It was hard work but worth it for the views. The bus in to Molivos was no more than 2 euros each, we got a taxi back for 8 after a bit of hagerling.
You can walk into Petra along the beach. Another walk which is lovely to Amblina (start the walk at Anaxos gardens a path down the side you have to follow the blue dots on the stones bizzare i know but thats the greeks and it is a bit of fun) it is along the cliff tops it takes about an hour you arrive in the next bay with a sandy beeach and a taverna with a welcoming drink and a feta cheese salad with herbs on it picked fresh from there garden. we walked back along the road it took us at least an hour and half in the hot heat, although it was lovely walking through the olive trees and I saw a baby tortoise crossing the road.
We didnt hire a car but everybody that did, hired it from billys about 25 euros a day a lot cheaper than the reps prices. well I feel like i have written an essay. We loved our weeks holiday and I am sure you will have great time. :pele

Hi there. We have been to Lesvos twice. We stayed in Petra, but went to Anaxos a few times for lunch, we walked along the coast, it tooks us about an hour, but only because we kept stopping off. We found all three resorts lovely in their own way. We got a taxi to Molyvos, they drop you off at the top of the hill, which makes it a much nicer experience not having to walk up to the castle only down. We hired a car for 3 days on both trips, and with it being such a big island, there is plenty of different places to go.

The only time I wouldn't have minded being delayed was from Mytiline airport. You check in your bags, then go outside. You can go to one of the restaurants, have lunch and a drink, so much nicer than sitting in a departure lounge. Across the road is the sea, so after our lunch we went to the sea, until we saw our plane arriving. The departure lounge is tiny, but you only need to be there 30 mins, by the time you have done your duty free shopping, walk through the gate straight onto the plane.

You'll love every minute in Lesvos, any thing else I can help you with please let me know

thanks for your replies, it seems that negative reports are very few and far between when it comes to lesvos which makes looking forward to it all the more enjoyable :D i was a little worried about mytilene airport after previous 'al fresco' check-ins at places such as zante and corfu, but eating your last greek meal by the sea after dumping the bags on the way home seems more than acceptable! i was kind of wondering too, as lesvos is a less well known island amongst us brit tourists, is the language barrier a little more prominent between visitors and the locals? not that this would at all bother me, i will just spend the early part of the summer in my back garden pouring over my phrase book getting into the swing with a large glass of vino...

Not at all. Like any greek island, they appreicate it if you try a few words of greek but don't worry, you'll not have a problem. We stayed in Petra a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed playing cards with locals on an evening!

I think you'll find that most of the people in Lesvos are Australian/Greeks. So they speak very good English. Obviously if you go off the beaten track you may find problems. But in the resorts it's fine.
