Hi there,
Can anybody help us to find somewhere to go in September this year that's less than a 4 hour journey away.
The past two years we have been in Kyrenia in nothern Cyprus. We liked it but the flight from Glasgow to Antalya plus the hour waiting on the plane and then on over to Cyprus is too much for my bad back.
The harbour area of old Kyrenia is lovely by day and night and we'd like to find somewhere similar that is both safe and comfortable to stroll around.
We had thought about Tunisia but reviews of the resorts on this site and the excessively rude, pestering salesmen have totally put us off. We don't mind haggling but not where we would feel pressurised and unsafe.
We like a bit of night life but don't want lots of noisy all-night clubs and discos. We like local colour too, not full of British pubs, chip shops and burger bars.
Hoping for some good ideas. If you have a recommendation for a good 4* or better hotel and good operator, that would be very welcome as well.
We went to Cyprus with an indepedent operator called Green Island and they were very good, especially on prices as they were long established in the area.
What about Madeira ?
Croatia? My dad like Lopud although it may be too quiet for you. I know there are flights from Glasgow to Croatia this year.
Parga sounds a good bet as the harbour there is beautiful with lots of very good eating places and quite a few bars, but definately not your typical brits abroad scene.
Benalmadena?
Lindos in Rhodes- absolutely stunning and some lovely quaint bars. However, you are walking on a slope a lot of the time and your calf muscles do take a day or two to adjust. If you can cope with slopes have a look at Lindos.
In September you should still be able to get a direct flight into Chania from the UK but you might have to fly into Heraklion from Glasgow. It's about an hours transfer/drive time from there to Chania. The other fly in the ointment is that I suspect that Chania is probably a more expensive area than Kyrenia.

we stayed at the Park Hotel.
As you like Kyrenia do you not fancy Turkey?.As you have landed in Antalya on the way to Northern Cyprus could you cope with a flight just to Antalya?.Side is about 50 minutes transfer from the airport and in September it will be lovely. There are some really good hotels here with excellent reviews.
Fethiye, Turkey has a lovely harbour.
Will do more looking into the Turkey thing; I did come across a small resort called Calis Beach which seems to be near Fethiye and a bit further from Side. Has anyone been to Calis?
Thanks everyone for the ideas - please keep posting more!
I like the area but I dont think Calis meets your criteria. Look at Gocek or Olu Deniz instead.
Went to Turkey for 2 weeks last summer and can honestly say that when we rounded a 'corner' on a boat trip from Fethyie, it was the only place I went 'Oh G** what have they done?".
It looked liked someone had gone mad with a load of concrete. Perhaps it looks different if you actually stay in it, but by the view from the boat it was a no no.
I still think the OP would prefer Fethiye harbour. The Ege Saray would be a good 4* hotel, right on the water front.
But to me comparing it to the natural beauty of Olu Deniz, with the lagoon and mountains all around or the Dalyan delta or the Turkish 'feel' of Fethyie I really couldn't see the attraction of Chalis at all. But as you say each to their own.
I agree that the Ege Saray would be good for the OP.

I agree with Croatia - Cavtat is a very pretty harbour town near to Dubrovnik, or maybe Dubrovnik itself?
Calis isn't very scenic. Although it's surrounded by mountains, Calis itself is very flat; it's built on marshland - and also has a problem with mosquitos'
All that's there is a narrowish beach, and a promenade with restaurants. It also gets windy. There isn't really a centre to Calis, and there's no harbour there either.
Fethiye on the other hand, is much more interesting and scenic. It has a lovely harbour, and fabulous views. All the restaurants surrounding the harbour (and in fact in Fethiye town) are traditional Turkish.
The harbour in Fethiye is much, much bigger than Kyrenia harbour, but is still peaceful and very beautiful. You can take boat trips from there to the surrounding islands off the Fethiye coast - and even take a water-taxi to Calis!
It doesn't have that same intimate magic of Kyrenia harbour, but to be fair, Kyrenia (especially at night) is quite unique and hard to beat. But Fethiye harbour is equally lovely , albeit in a different way.
The Ece Saray Marina Hotel overlooks the harbour, and is quite grand. It caters for the more mature guest, and their evening meals are particularly good.
Fethiye is a lovely town, and there's much to see. You're also close to Oludeniz, which is breathtakingly beautiful, and has a wonderful lagoon.
I've been to Kyrenia, and I know Fethiye extremely well, and I'm certain if you like Kyrenia - you will like Fethiye too.
