I had applied for Irish passports for my hubby and 3 kids. As I live in Belfast my applications had to be sent to Dublin. I paid an extra £24.00 to royal Mail to have these fast tracked. They were fast tracked and picked up on Monday by a postman who is covering holiday leave. The postman in question has put these letters, all four of them into someone elses letterbox and can't remember which one.
I am going on the 14 of August.
The delivery manager in royal mail told me there is nothing he can do only reprimand the postman.
I am now faced with having to drive to Dublin over 100 miles and spending the day in a passport office with three young children in order to have temporary passports issued.
I would just like to make this known to as many people as possible.
Not only are our passports missing but all our full birth certificates which cost £26.00 each.
It's very worrying to know that my childrens personal details and there passports are in some strangers hands. So much for data protection and customer care.
Doesn't sound like you got a satisfactory response from Royal Mail at all. I hope you get this sorted this out. In the meantime I am going to move this to Complaints to see if anyone can advise.
i dont know if this helps but give these a try postwatch 08456013265 (the post watchdog)
did you speak to the delivery office where you live??? if so ring royal mail customer service and speak to a supervisor and tell them your not happy and what compensation are they going to give you for lost passports and birth certs.
dont let them fob you off.
how big an area does this postie cover, and how friendly an area is it ?
That's appalling, but this worries me -
to have temporary passports issued.
I'm pretty sure you are going to need proper full passports to get into Bulgaria, for everyone and with photos. Don't like the sound of 'temporary passports'. Check with the Bulgarian Embassy if need be.
Hope it all goes well.
Peter
I was going to say demand some recompense for them, but also you never know if the person who has received them is going to forward them on to you - I know I would if I got passports through my door - after all they've got the correct address on.
sorry for your troubles Maldo... cant believe a postman could do something so stupid. not one, but four letters to the wrong address... dont know about royal mail but have you contacted the passport office? you still have ten days left ( i know its cutting it fine) but maybe they could re-issue new ones and cancel the ones that were sent out ( for you to return when and if you do receive them). what a mess... i hope you get sorted, keep us updated... Tina
I do live in a nice enough area and I'm pretty sure most of my neighbours would bring them to me,. but what if the occupant is away on holiday, a lot of the people around here have summer homes or caravans.
I think the passports will be full passports but only valid for 6 months. the passport office have asked for new photos and new birth cert. for my husband. The kids don't need new proofs as they are already on my valid passport
has the royal mail office checked the signature to see if they can make out the name? its a long shot but that may help to trace the person who signed for them.
Hi, surely there could be another way of tracing the lost passports, on the form one has to sign for delivery there is a space for the time, if this so called postie is a regular, knowing the walk he does he should be able to narrow down where these packages have been left. tonyt
If you have or are intending to speak to the passport office, ask them NOT TO CANCEL THESE PASSPORTS, but to put a hold on them for 7 days, in the event they turn up.
Once cancelled, they cannot reissue these passports and you may have to attend your local passport office for re issue of new passports, if they are required immediately.
I am advising you of this only as a precaution in case you don't know -
With effect from 1 January 2006, all children entering Bulgaria will need to have their own passport. Children included in parents' passports will only be allowed in if the passport also contains their photograph.

Peter when I said my kids are on my passport which is valid, I'm saying that this is the reason the passport office will issue them new individual ones. Whereas they have never heard of my husband so to speak as he has never held an Irish passport which means he will have to do a full new application. ( do you know what I mean?).
The cost of the items in those envelopes are as follows:
£137.00 for the passports
£24.00 for the post office to fast track them
£104.00 for 4 long birth certificates
£27.00 for photographs
I think you have a good claim for compensation there as it is obviously the Post Office's fault and it can be proved. You should be able to find details of how to claim at the Post Office.
I'm sorry to hear of this problem for you, giving you additional stress in the run-up towards your holiday.
I think there is an excellent chance that the person who got your passports through their door will bring them back to you.
As something pro-active to do, could you contact the Post Office and ask which houses comprise this particular postman's usual walk and then pop a note through all the letterboxes, asking them to pass on the package pdq as it's urgent.
It may be a pain, but it just may get results and save you a journey to Dublin.
Good luck
Polly
I really hope you get this sorted, good idea about going round the streets - if you get the kids involved with putting notes in doors that should make it a quicker job.
There is no reason why they cannot do the same thing. It is their fault.
I would have thought that they would be very concerned about lost passports due to their fault. It raises the issue were they lost or stolen?
Some years ago son in law had the same problem. He was required to collect the replacement passport in person from the head post office, producing carious documents to prove his identity.
I do hope you get it resolved.

Hope you get this sorted in time for your holidays.
My son has just renewed his passport, it took eight days from him posting the application to receiving his new passport. It was also sent by motorbike courier and had to be signed for on delivery. I was suprised at this as I thought they just sent them via normal post, (his old passport was returned via normal post). We made no special arrangements for this just sent off the application, no post office check and send or no fast track.
Really hope you get your 'lost' passports or replacements in time
Regards Jackie
I to am a little surprised that they have come via the regular post.
Renewed all my familys passports this year and passports and supporting documentation all arrived on seperate days and via courier early in the evening. I used our local check and send service via World Choice. Took them in on a Monday lunchtime and our passports were with us on the Saturday. I had to sign for them and the courier scanned the bar codes.
Hope you get it sorted out

I'm sure it's them it's too much of a coincidence for it not to be.
Thanks a lot to each and everyone of you and thank God.
