hi maxcat
no they were avoclar and pauludrine (spelling is wrong!!)
i have found 2 weeks supply, so i think i will get them in cavolossim, does anyone know if the chemist there sells them??
only 9 weeks to go !!!
Hopr you have a good time
You can get the malaria tablets from Robinson De Mello's Chemist shop it's on the left hand side as you drive into Cavelossim
directly across from the Mobor Beach Hotel Robinson is a very helpful chap.
We buy ours from him every year, can't remember how much but nothing like here in the UK. we use Resochin-DS/Proguani tablets IP which is the equivalent to Paludrine/Avloclor that's sold here in the UK
never take them on a empty stomach, we have found the best time to take them is after our evening meal that way we never get any side effects.
Hope this helps
Tush
thanks tush, i will make a note of the name and put it in my "holiday drawer"
Just checked our supply for next week proguanil tablets 55 rupees for 10 resochin-DS two a day
6.79rupees for 6 one a week
tush
thats cheap !!!
I was told they give the least side effects by the nurse, what are the side effects of the cheaper ones?
Trying to keep the cost down as much as I can..
Hi manx-minx - the most common side effects of progunil and chloroquin (avloclor) that you get from the chemist at a reasonable price are some nausea or upset stomach. This can be helped by taking them with an evening meal to help them be absorbed. Also if taken later you sleep throught the worst effects and ensure you eat brakfast and take plenty of fluids. Good luck but please make sure you take them, not doing so is a bieg risk
Just returned (boo) from a wonderful time in Goa.
I was very concerned about taking Malaria tablets that would upset my tummy. The last thing you want to do is feel poorly whilst on your holidays.
I bought Malarone at a cost of £70.50 for 21 tablets. Ive never taken any others so don't know whether or not they would upset me or not. I had no problems with Malarone at all. Just got the 7 days to take after returning.
Next year I want to take my two teenagers but cannot afford £70.50 x 3! I think a course of the others is only about £12.00. I guess its just a case of take them and see? I got bitten quite alot whilst there, even through my jeans on the way home! I put repellant on etc. but I guess I am just tasty
A few people I spoke to weren't taken them as their GP said they didnt need them for Goa. I personally don't want to take that risk and my GP said they were necessary.
You mentioned Gambia,we were advised to take Malarone then as the alternitive(dotrocyclin! or something like that have really nasty side effects)
PM me if you need any help
malarone tablets are the best,as they protect against all types of malaria, and contrary to what i read on this forum all types of malaria DO exist in goa including falciparum,my friend contracted it here two years ago and died, problems with malarone are 1) the cost 2)can only be taken for 28 days
chloroquine and proguanil reasonably cheap take one chlor on the same day each week and two proguanil per day start the week before you come these can be bought at boots etc.over the counter no prescription, get your one weeks supply in uk then buy rest when you get here,
larium not really to be recommended as side effects include hallucinations, depression doctors dont like to prescribe them
doxycycline is a wide based one used for all sorts of things if your teenager has spots and you take them to docs, you may find they are already on themon the docs prescription
Friends of ours had to go to Cambodia to look for their son after he became delerious and wandered off from the lads he had gone traveling with.He was missing for 3weeks,but thankfully they found him but he was in quite a bad way.
Everything is ok now but i would think twice about taking it,even if it meant have to shell out more for
malarone.
Lucky we did because the guy from Travelpharm rung me and asked did I know that O.H. would have to start taking the malarone earlier as he is on warfarin. He would then have to get his blood checked here and if it was still stable fine - otherwise he'd have to have another blood test whilst in Goa. I said our GP hadn't mentioned this and he said no - a lot of them don't realise it DOES affect the INR levels.
Hi everyone, time is nearly here fly on Sunday. I went to the doctor for malaria tablets and he has given me a prescription for Doxycycline will these be fine for Goa? Reading the leaflet it does say malaria, but also says for acne etc. Just wanting to make sure before I get there!

It wouldn't be my choice because one of the side effects is skin irritation caused by the sun.
Doxycycline gave me a lot of indigestion. I could only find the tablets in Goa, the SR capsules may have had less side effects. You need to be careful with some pharmacies, the dosage for malaria prevention is 100mg daily, the first pharmacy I tried (Candolim) offered me 200mg tablets. It was so uncomfortable I stopped taking it after a few days
It was so uncomfortable I stopped taking it after a few days
That, according to reports, is the biggest cause of people catching Malaria...giving up taking the tablets they had already bought.
