Hi there,
We're looking to go away next March and can't decide between either flying to Kuala Lumpar for a few days then on to Bali, or go to Kuala Lumpar, then Penang and Langkawi. We went on honeymoon to Bangkok and Koh Samui last year and really loved it so want to go somewhere in Asia again.
We like good food, want to be able to do some sightseeing and some relaxation too. Also what would the weather be like at either place last 2 weeks of March? We are limited to be able to go at any other time next year.
Any info or suggestions would be great as the more I read about both places the more I want to go to both - so confusing!
Many thanks
Firstly, have a look at the weather in Bali. It is beginning to improve at the end of March (look down the whole page of the link - you can change dates / months by navigation) http://www.wunderground.com/history/station/97230/2009/3/25/MonthlyHistory.html
Then have a look at Langkawi - yes it surprised me too!

My preference would probably be Bali, but there again Janet and I love Bali (we are doing KL & Bali in September) - It is not so "bright and sparkling" as Thailand, the temples look quite drab, because of the stone used to build them. For scenery (rice paddies, lakes, volcanos, forest) I think that Bali is great.
I would avoid Nusa Dua, unless you want a "packaged" environment. The hotels are very good, but it is all rather artificial. Sanur is a great village, with lots of restaurants outside of the hotels. The beaches in Bali are generally not up to Thailand, though.
If you enjoy peace and tranquility and Balinese dance and crafts, then a couple of nights in Ubud would also probably suit. Janet, my wife, loves Balinese Spas - which seem to be remarkable value.
The end of March is a difficult time in SE Asia, but if you do your research and are prepared for some showers, you won't go far wrong.
Good luck
Peter
I almost forgot to mention Nyepi Day in Bali (I think it will be about March 16th this year)
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyepi . You will find that there will be restricted service and staff in hotels - and going out on to trhe beach / street is a no-no.
Cheers
Peter
