w e are going to malgrat in september and want to make our own way for a visit to salou we know we have to get the train from malgrat to barcelona and then either bus or train to salou does anyone know how long it takes.

Not sure about the first leg you will have to do but a coach from Barcelona takes 90 mins to get to Salou. The train, i think takes around 40-45 mins.

Having stayed in Calella a few years ago I did roughly the same trip and it took around 2 and half hours if you time the trains properly. You do have to change trains twice however. Once at Mataro and again at Barcelona Sant. I suggest you check out the RENFE website for train tabletables etc as the trains from Barcelona to Salou are not that frequent after mid morning. I would therefore advise you to make an early start.
