Hi there, looking for a bit of advice for my parents who don't yet have access to the internet (don't wory, I'm working on it!!).
They have seen a reader offer in our local paper for a holiday to Bugibba that seems a real bargain. It has to be taken between Nov06 and April07. The hotel featured is the Topaz.
I've read the reviews for the Topaz on here and I've printed it off for them but what I wanted was some info on the resort.
Can anyone let me know what it'll be like that time of year and what there is to do? They don't like anything too busy but equally don't want to go somewhere where nothing will be open. Also, what is the beach like?
Hope someone can help. Thanks.
Dawn
what is the beach like
This must be the beach that only charliegirl007 has seen, I think she was taken in by some mischievous leprechauns who played a joke on her or perhaps a small refreshment was involved
Seriously, as charliegirl says there is a new man made beach in Bugibba which has been in the planning for a while now, HERE is an artists impression, previously all the bathing was done from rocks.
The nearest beach (apart from a very small beach in St Pauls) is at Mellieha Bay, which is about 20 mins away by bus and there is also Golden Bay further on again.
Weather wise mmmm, most (75%) of Malta's rain falls between October & March so it can be a bit wet and also windy for a few days, also a bit cool but you also get days of nice sunshine.
THIS page will give you more info on the weather and also a table at the bottom of sunshine, rainfall etc for all the months.
The Topaz hotel was totally refurbished a few years ago and from what I have heard it is nice, remember that hotel ratings in Malta are different from here in the UK, so if it says a 4* don't expect it to be similar to a 4* here, more likely to be a 3*. The hotel is located a bit back from the resort centre and square area so there is a small walk involved, however there are several small supermarkets and bars close to the hotel.
THIS is the hotel website where you can get more information.
There is the normal mixed bag of reviews HERE and also a couple of pages of reviews HERE remember when reading them what I mentioned about the rating system
Bugibba will be a bit quieter in the winter months but there will still be many places open and the rest of this fantastic island is very easily reached by the excellent and cheap public bus system. A review, information and pictures of Bugibba can be found HERE
There is so much to see and do in Malta that it is well worth leaving the resort and spending a day(s) or a few half days visiting various areas, Valletta, Mdina, Rabat ect and try to fit in a days visit to beautiful Gozo (even more laid back than Malta) that bit keeps Mark happy
THIS is a superb website providing a huge amount of information covering all the areas of islands.
I hope this is of some help to you and if it was me I would book it and go
Graham
Thanks so much for the quick reply Graham that information is really helpful. I'll pass all that on to them.
Hi there, Yes the beach is there now, very similar to the artists impression. I have stayed at the Topaz many times and the food is better than any other hotel in the area. It depends on the mobility of your parents as to whether it will be suitable. you can book with the hotel direct, through their web site and it is much cheaper than through an agent. If you have any more questions about the Topaz or St Pauls/ Buggiba area please feel free to PM me
We have just returned from Malta and can fully agree with Charliegirl's comments as to the artist impression of the beach. Although I think it was built in the wrong location, it should have been built directly opposite Buggiba Square (circle).

M&N interesting comment, I know that many locals go bathing from the rocks at the area down the steps from the square circle ( I remember when vehicles were able to go around that area before the new fountain) why do you think the raised beach was positioned near the New Dolmen hotel as compared to the square ?
I hope it wasn't to discourage locals from using it

I am completely puzzled as to why they decided to locate the beach near to the Casino/Dolmen Hotel. Maybe it was to please both Bugggiba and Qawra traders by situating it in between the two areas?
