Similar to anjuna but smaller. Nicer to look round when its a bit cooler too.
They have live musicians, and some food stalls. Its not that far from anjuna about 1/2 hour in a auto rickshaw from candolim. Best to go about 5 when it opens as its not so busy.

If it's the market at Baga on a Saturday that you mean, its noisy and busy but fun. The stalls are all selling the same dtuff you see in the shops or on the beach etc.
safe ,except for pick pocket awareness, plenty of police in attendance.
Live entertainment last year was the most unlikely Elvis impersonator, complete with backing singers and people in the market rocking and rolling (complete with throwing your girl over your shoulder, which is interesting when she is only wearing a skirt and thong!!!)
Stalls selling food and drinks(beer etc)
next door to the Marina Dourada Hotel.
worth visiting once during your holiday

Thanks SueSteph & Del

I am really looking forward to going to the market, it sounds like fun! Think we will leave the men to babysit while us girlies take a trip to spend some money.

Either of you stayed at Palolem beach? have heard only about £1 per person per night in beach hut/treehouse

Louise if you wish to go to the saturday night bazzar, don't go to the one next to the Marina Dourada Hotel - this has always been the 'original',the guy who used to run it has set up a bigger and better one a bit further up the road, ask the taxi driver to take you to 'the new market' called 'Ingos'
We went to both a few years ago but always stick with the new one.
More food stalls (and all very very good) and lots more 'hic-hic' beer stalls.Music and entertainment has always been good to see and listen to,fire eaters/dancers/ sword juggling/jazz/blues/rock/folk - take your camera !!
15 mins from Candolim and 10 mins from Calangute, taxi driver will wait all night, lots of them but he will find you !!

Have to agree with you Spike...... Ingoe's far better then Mackies....

Ingo's is much better, Ingo is a bit harsh on the market holders but I guess he has a business to run, but it has a great atmosphere and the food stalls are lovely

Hmmmm......I think Louise might be talking about the indoor night market at Arpora.....

There are lots and lots of markets about. The ones you should definitely try to make are Anjuna (catch a taxi to Baga and get a boat from Baga beach - costs 100 rupees - otherwise you will sit in a traffic jam for about an hour), either one of the night markets in Baga and Mapusa Market. The indoor market at Arpora isn't really very different from Anjuna except its indoors.

Mapusa Market is an Indian market (as opposed to a tourist market). It's about a 15-20 miute cab ride from Candolim. Ask your taxi driver to act as a guide because the market is very busy, very hectic. We ususally have a wander round and decide what we want and then getthe taxi driver to go back and buy for us as the Indians get much better prices than europeans - not that anythings that expensive its just that haggling can take a while and you'd nver make it round themarket if you had to haggle for everything you buy. We then tip the taxi driver half of what he's saved us so everyones happy.

Thanks for the tip with the taxi driver at Mapusa market. Think that I will go and give it a try!

Only 14 more sleeps now! Counting down the days!

If you think of anything else let me know!

Cheers

Mapsua and Anjuna Markets are good but Ingo's is by far the best market happening.
Its only every Sat and has this wonderful buzz to it.
Lots of lil stalls, lovely food area with tons of choice to tickle and fancy and plenty of alcohol to wash it down too ;)
They have a performance area too with musicians/jugglers,fire-eaters , et all

I'd say go around 7pm, browse around, shop, eat/drink watch the performances and then head home.

didnt rate mapusa market at all to be honest, just got severe hassle from kids, place stunk of rotting veg and fish and nothing of note to buy. I would say dont waste your time and spend your time at the sat night market/ingos and anjuna.

Mapusa market is good for a look round to see how the people trade and to see what is on offer in general - I go to these in all the countrys i visit.
Have also had a walk round the fish docks very interesting (if you like fish that is) good to see fish you do not get at home, and again to see how they do business / work etc....
As for Ingo's - as stated it is totaly different, yeah same stuff they sell at Anjuna and in shops / beaches, but the 'buzz' of the crowd the music and the food makes it a great night out.

I will be in Goa in January with my wife and two daughters. They are all into shopping in a big way. I was wondering what days are the main markets on, where they are and from what time. :hyper Were staying in Candolim.

Hi,

there are only only 2 tourist markets running now Mackies on a Sat night, located in Arpora and the flea market at Anjuna there are many threads on here discussing the sites you can find using the search facility.

Map with Mackies location Mackies map

the Anjuna market is further north (about 15mins) and off the map and is on a Wednesday.
(would of put a link to http://www.johnthemap.co.uk but site is down at the moment)
